Nikola, sv. (grč. Νιϰόλαος, Nikólaos, lat. Nicolaus), biskup (Patara, Licija, oko 270 – Mira, Licija, oko 350). Sudjelovao je na Prvome nikejskom koncilu 325. Istaknuo se karitativnim radom (tri djevojke opremio mirazom) i čudesima (utišao oluju na moru). Život mu je ovijen mnogobrojnim legendama. Tijelo mu je preneseno iz Mire u Bari, gdje je i danas njegovo veliko svetište. Posebno ga štuje kršćanski Istok, osobito Rusija, piše Hrvatska enciklopedija LZ Miroslav Krleža.
Za njegov blagdan djeca i odrasli dobivaju darove i taj dan se u nekim krajevima zove - nikolinje.
U likovnoj umjetnosti najprije je bio prikazivan po bizantskome uzoru s obraslom sijedom bradom i biskupskim plaštem, poslije i sa štapom i mitrom. U ruskoj umjetnosti od XII. st. najčešći je svetački lik na ikonama. U zapadnoj umjetnosti česti su prikazi s motivima iz legendi o sv. Nikoli.
Etnolozi smatraju da običajna praksa Nikolinja dijelom nasljeduje kult sličnoga lika iz pretkršćanske Europe. U narodnim je običajima sv. Nikola najpoznatiji kao predbožićni darivatelj (danas uglavnom djece, a u starije doba i odraslih), te dobročinitelj, svetac zaštitnik mladih (djece, neudanih djevojaka, učenika), putnika, niza profesija (pomoraca, splavara, mlinara, ljekarnika, pekara, svjećara, trgovaca, zidara, tkalaca i dr.) te nekih osobitih kategorija ljudi (npr. lopova i zatvorenika).
Običajna praksa na cijelom je hrvatskom prostoru uglavnom vezana uz dva usporedna običaja darivanja koji imaju i odgojnu funkciju. Prvi je obilazak lika sv. Nikole odjevenog u biskupsku odjeću (biskupski ogrtač, mitra i štap, odn. biskupska palica) od kuće do kuće uz pratnju jednog ili više likova odjevenih tako da predstavljaju vragove te opremljenih lancima kojima buče. Oni od djece traže da mole, pa ako to znaju, sv. Nikola ih daruje, a ako ne znaju, prijete im različitim sankcijama. Drugi je običaj potajno noćno darivanje djece u očišćenu obuću ostavljenu u prozoru.
U Hrvatskoj do druge polovice XIX. st. pretežno građanska, a odonda i seoska tradicija. U nikolinjskim tradicijama isprepleću se elementi darivanja povezani sa sv. Lucijom (13. XII), Malim Isusom (Božić, tj. 25. XII), te kasnijim likovima svjetovne ikonografije kao što su Santa Nikolaus (Santa Claus), Djed Mraz, Djed Božićnjak, navodi Hrvatska enciklopedija LZ Miroslav Krleža.

Jutros je kroz Sinj i okolicu prošao Sveti Nikola na konjskoj zapregi i to u pratnji policije! Nosio je darove sinjskim mališanima.

Nikola, sv. (grč. Νιϰόλαος, Nikólaos, lat. Nicolaus), biskup (Patara, Licija, oko 270 – Mira, Licija, oko 350). Sudjelovao je na Prvome nikejskom koncilu 325. Istaknuo se karitativnim radom (tri djevojke opremio mirazom) i čudesima (utišao oluju na moru). Život mu je ovijen mnogobrojnim legendama. Tijelo mu je preneseno iz Mire u Bari, gdje je i danas njegovo veliko svetište. Posebno ga štuje kršćanski Istok, osobito Rusija, piše Hrvatska enciklopedija LZ Miroslav Krleža.
Za njegov blagdan djeca i odrasli dobivaju darove i taj dan se u nekim krajevima zove - nikolinje.
U likovnoj umjetnosti najprije je bio prikazivan po bizantskome uzoru s obraslom sijedom bradom i biskupskim plaštem, poslije i sa štapom i mitrom. U ruskoj umjetnosti od XII. st. najčešći je svetački lik na ikonama. U zapadnoj umjetnosti česti su prikazi s motivima iz legendi o sv. Nikoli.
Etnolozi smatraju da običajna praksa Nikolinja dijelom nasljeduje kult sličnoga lika iz pretkršćanske Europe. U narodnim je običajima sv. Nikola najpoznatiji kao predbožićni darivatelj (danas uglavnom djece, a u starije doba i odraslih), te dobročinitelj, svetac zaštitnik mladih (djece, neudanih djevojaka, učenika), putnika, niza profesija (pomoraca, splavara, mlinara, ljekarnika, pekara, svjećara, trgovaca, zidara, tkalaca i dr.) te nekih osobitih kategorija ljudi (npr. lopova i zatvorenika).
Običajna praksa na cijelom je hrvatskom prostoru uglavnom vezana uz dva usporedna običaja darivanja koji imaju i odgojnu funkciju. Prvi je obilazak lika sv. Nikole odjevenog u biskupsku odjeću (biskupski ogrtač, mitra i štap, odn. biskupska palica) od kuće do kuće uz pratnju jednog ili više likova odjevenih tako da predstavljaju vragove te opremljenih lancima kojima buče. Oni od djece traže da mole, pa ako to znaju, sv. Nikola ih daruje, a ako ne znaju, prijete im različitim sankcijama. Drugi je običaj potajno noćno darivanje djece u očišćenu obuću ostavljenu u prozoru.
U Hrvatskoj do druge polovice XIX. st. pretežno građanska, a odonda i seoska tradicija. U nikolinjskim tradicijama isprepleću se elementi darivanja povezani sa sv. Lucijom (13. XII), Malim Isusom (Božić, tj. 25. XII), te kasnijim likovima svjetovne ikonografije kao što su Santa Nikolaus (Santa Claus), Djed Mraz, Djed Božićnjak, navodi Hrvatska enciklopedija LZ Miroslav Krleža.
