Kao odgovor na odluku Ujedinjene Kraljevine da pošalje ratni brod kao potporu Gvajani, Venezuela je izdala zapovijed svojim oružanim snagama da provedu obrambene vojne vježbe. Vojni čelnici najavili su da će 5600 vojnika sudjelovati u tim vježbama, s fokusom na istočne Karibe i obale Venezuele.

Taj potez dolazi nakon što su venezuelanski glasači podržali pripojenje naftom bogate regije Essequibo, područje pod tradicionalnom upravom Gvajane. Predsjednik Nicolás Maduro, u televizijskom obraćanju, okarakterizirao je vojnu vježbu kao odgovor na percipiranu provokaciju i prijetnju koju predstavlja Ujedinjena Kraljevina, nazvavši to "praktično vojnom prijetnjom iz Londona". Ustvrdio je da je ta akcija prekršila nedavni sporazum između Venezuele i Gvajane da se ne pribjegava sili u rješavanju njihovog spora, piše Jutarnji list.

Ujedinjena Kraljevina ranije je potvrdila da će se HMS Trent uključiti u zajedničke vježbe s Gvajanom nakon Božića, preusmjerujući brod s njegove početne misije borbe protiv krijumčarenja droge na Karibima. Odluka o preusmjeravanju ratnog broda uslijedila je nakon što je Venezuela zaprijetila aneksijom sporne regije Essequibo.

Gvajanski potpredsjednik Bharrat Jagdeo opisao je prisutnost broda kao rutinu i dio jačanja obrambenih sposobnosti, naglasivši kako nekakav udar na Venezuelu nije opcija.

- I Maduro to dobro zna... - rekao je Jagdeo.

Dugotrajni teritorijalni spor vrti se oko zahtjeva Venezuele za pripojenje regije Essequibo, koja čini značajan dio Gvajane, s proturječnim tvrdnjama o granicama koje datiraju iz međunarodnog sporazuma iz 1899. godine.

Kao odgovor na odluku Ujedinjene Kraljevine da pošalje ratni brod kao potporu Gvajani, Venezuela je izdala zapovijed svojim oružanim snagama da provedu obrambene vojne vježbe. Vojni čelnici najavili su da će 5600 vojnika sudjelovati u tim vježbama, s fokusom na istočne Karibe i obale Venezuele.

Taj potez dolazi nakon što su venezuelanski glasači podržali pripojenje naftom bogate regije Essequibo, područje pod tradicionalnom upravom Gvajane. Predsjednik Nicolás Maduro, u televizijskom obraćanju, okarakterizirao je vojnu vježbu kao odgovor na percipiranu provokaciju i prijetnju koju predstavlja Ujedinjena Kraljevina, nazvavši to "praktično vojnom prijetnjom iz Londona". Ustvrdio je da je ta akcija prekršila nedavni sporazum između Venezuele i Gvajane da se ne pribjegava sili u rješavanju njihovog spora, piše Jutarnji list.

Ujedinjena Kraljevina ranije je potvrdila da će se HMS Trent uključiti u zajedničke vježbe s Gvajanom nakon Božića, preusmjerujući brod s njegove početne misije borbe protiv krijumčarenja droge na Karibima. Odluka o preusmjeravanju ratnog broda uslijedila je nakon što je Venezuela zaprijetila aneksijom sporne regije Essequibo.

Gvajanski potpredsjednik Bharrat Jagdeo opisao je prisutnost broda kao rutinu i dio jačanja obrambenih sposobnosti, naglasivši kako nekakav udar na Venezuelu nije opcija.

- I Maduro to dobro zna... - rekao je Jagdeo.

Dugotrajni teritorijalni spor vrti se oko zahtjeva Venezuele za pripojenje regije Essequibo, koja čini značajan dio Gvajane, s proturječnim tvrdnjama o granicama koje datiraju iz međunarodnog sporazuma iz 1899. godine.
