Mirisi ljeta, mora, plaže, godišnjeg odmora dopiru iz kadrova filma "Mračna kći" ("The Lost Daughter"), jednako kao sa stranica knjige istoimena romana talijanske spisateljice Elene Ferrante iz 2006. godine. Ljeto je vrijeme radnje, a mjesto jonska obala, fiktivni grčki otok Kyopeli, gdje na odmor, gurajući kofere napola pune knjiga, dolazi razvedena sredovječna profesorica i prevoditeljica s imenom iz Yeatsove poeme – Leda (oskarovka Olivia Colman; "Miljenica", "Otac").

Glumica Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Odgajateljica") odlično je pročitala Ferrante u svom dojmljivom redateljskom/scenarističkom debiju "Mračna kći" i onomatopejski rekreirala osjećaj ljeta. Slike i zvukovi se prelijevaju s ekrana, cvrčci cvrče, valovi se lagano valjaju i nježno zapljuskuju obalu od pijeska...

Međutim, kako priča dalje teče, valovi otkrivaju zakopane tajne u pijesku koje bodu poput oštrog kamenčića ili komadića stakla u dodiru s bosom nogom. I ugođaj je sve svježiji i čini se kako samo odaje privid topline, kao sunčan dan u kasnom studenom kad vam i na suncu isto treba barem jedan dugi rukav da ne prozebete.

"The Lost Daughter" nije lepršavi "ljetni film", kao što ni roman nije "knjiga za plažu". To je psihološka drama i počiva na Ledinim unutarnjim mislima i konfliktima koji je tište, a uzburkat će se kad je susret s mladom majkom u bikiniju Ninom (dobra Dakota Johnson) i njezinom kćeri Elenom vrati natrag u godine kad je i sama bila mama dviju djevojčica i u nesretnom braku, što će je razapeti između sadašnjosti i uspomena prošlosti.

Gyllenhaal nije imala lagan zadatak preseliti Ledine unutarnje monologe iz knjige na ekran, ali uspjela je tako što se senzualna, intimna kamera darovite snimateljice Helene Louvart ("Sretni Lazzaro", "Nikad, rijetko, ponekad, uvijek", "Murina") često nalazi blizu Lede. Kadrovi na momente gotovo postaju subjektivni u Ledinu pogledu na ljude i svijet oko sebe, kako bi Gyllenhaal gledateljima približila pomalo distancirani lik i njezin tok svijesti i uvukla ih u film koji, poput knjige, ne možete prestati "čitati".

Naravno, od presudne je važnosti za "Mračnu kći" bio i angažman izvanredne Colmanice za glavnu ulogu, jer glumičin govor tijela, geste, ekspresije nadomještaju Ledine osjećaje, prosute na stranice knjige poput kapljica s kose nakon izlaska iz mora. Primjerice, kad Leda pri početku filma otkrije kako ima dvije kćeri, ona samo duboko izdahne i ne odgovori ništa nakon što je pitaju gdje su jer – oprez: blagi "spoiler" – kasnije doznajemo da ih je napustila na tri godine.

Čitatelji pamte da je Leda u romanu rekla "Neizgovoreno govori više od izgovorenog", a Gyllenhaal je upamtila te riječi i prenijela ih na film koji znade biti dobrodošlo intrigantno nedokučiv poput knjige, toliko da na svakom čitatelju/gledatelju ostaje da sam između redaka pročita/sagleda pomalo misteriozni lik Lede i širu sliku. Još je jedna Ledina rečenica iz knjige značajna za Gyllenhalličin pristup adaptaciji: "Najteže je govoriti o onome što ni sami ne možemo razumjeti".

Ipak, "The Lost Daughter" nije "Mulholland Drive", "Donnie Darko" ili "Inception". Film (i knjiga) govori o majkama i kćerkama, majčinstvu, ulogama roditelja, svim užicima, ali i tjeskobama koje s time dolaze u paketu i mogu početi gušiti osobu željnu karijere i slobode, što Gyllenhaal efektno dočarava u klaustrofobičnom prošlosnom segmentu filma, kad mladu majku Ledu, u nesretnom braku, glumi sjajna Jessie Buckley ("Vrijeme je da okončam ovo").

"Ponekad mislim da se ne mogu o njima brinuti", kaže Leda u flešbekovima prošlosti koje se njezina starija verzija prisjeća. Flešbekovi su više od pukih flešbekova u formi fragmenata sjećanja i takoreći se odmotavaju kao ravnopravna paralelna radnja s onom u sadašnjosti, gdje Leda prepoznaje sebe u Nini, a svoje kćerke u Eleni koja se prema lutki odnosi kao da joj je mama.

Kad Elena jednog dana na plaži nestane, instinktivno je pronalazi upravo Leda, ponašajući se da je već prošla nešto slično sa svojom djecom, ali uzima njezinu lutku kao kratkotrajni nadomjestak za izgubljenu kćer. Lutka koja sjedi na pijesku simbolično oslikava naslovnicu knjige, dok plakat filma krasi Leda sjedeći na pješčanoj plaži. "Mračna kći", knjiga i film, gradi kule u pijesku majčinstva.

Nominacije za Zlatne globuse
"Mračna kći" je osvojila nagradu za scenarij na Venecijanskom festivalu, nominirana je i za dva Zlatna globusa (ženska uloga, režija), a mogla bi lako ostvariti i slične nominacije na Oscarima. U filmu su sporedne uloge odigrali i veteran Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard (partner Maggie Gyllenhaal u stvarnom životu), Dagmara Dominczyk, Jack Farthing ("Spencer"), Oliver Jackson-Cohen ("Nevidljivi čovjek"), Paul Mescal (serija "Normal People")...

Mirisi ljeta, mora, plaže, godišnjeg odmora dopiru iz kadrova filma "Mračna kći" ("The Lost Daughter"), jednako kao sa stranica knjige istoimena romana talijanske spisateljice Elene Ferrante iz 2006. godine. Ljeto je vrijeme radnje, a mjesto jonska obala, fiktivni grčki otok Kyopeli, gdje na odmor, gurajući kofere napola pune knjiga, dolazi razvedena sredovječna profesorica i prevoditeljica s imenom iz Yeatsove poeme – Leda (oskarovka Olivia Colman; "Miljenica", "Otac").

Glumica Maggie Gyllenhaal ("Odgajateljica") odlično je pročitala Ferrante u svom dojmljivom redateljskom/scenarističkom debiju "Mračna kći" i onomatopejski rekreirala osjećaj ljeta. Slike i zvukovi se prelijevaju s ekrana, cvrčci cvrče, valovi se lagano valjaju i nježno zapljuskuju obalu od pijeska...

Međutim, kako priča dalje teče, valovi otkrivaju zakopane tajne u pijesku koje bodu poput oštrog kamenčića ili komadića stakla u dodiru s bosom nogom. I ugođaj je sve svježiji i čini se kako samo odaje privid topline, kao sunčan dan u kasnom studenom kad vam i na suncu isto treba barem jedan dugi rukav da ne prozebete.

"The Lost Daughter" nije lepršavi "ljetni film", kao što ni roman nije "knjiga za plažu". To je psihološka drama i počiva na Ledinim unutarnjim mislima i konfliktima koji je tište, a uzburkat će se kad je susret s mladom majkom u bikiniju Ninom (dobra Dakota Johnson) i njezinom kćeri Elenom vrati natrag u godine kad je i sama bila mama dviju djevojčica i u nesretnom braku, što će je razapeti između sadašnjosti i uspomena prošlosti.

Gyllenhaal nije imala lagan zadatak preseliti Ledine unutarnje monologe iz knjige na ekran, ali uspjela je tako što se senzualna, intimna kamera darovite snimateljice Helene Louvart ("Sretni Lazzaro", "Nikad, rijetko, ponekad, uvijek", "Murina") često nalazi blizu Lede. Kadrovi na momente gotovo postaju subjektivni u Ledinu pogledu na ljude i svijet oko sebe, kako bi Gyllenhaal gledateljima približila pomalo distancirani lik i njezin tok svijesti i uvukla ih u film koji, poput knjige, ne možete prestati "čitati".

Naravno, od presudne je važnosti za "Mračnu kći" bio i angažman izvanredne Colmanice za glavnu ulogu, jer glumičin govor tijela, geste, ekspresije nadomještaju Ledine osjećaje, prosute na stranice knjige poput kapljica s kose nakon izlaska iz mora. Primjerice, kad Leda pri početku filma otkrije kako ima dvije kćeri, ona samo duboko izdahne i ne odgovori ništa nakon što je pitaju gdje su jer – oprez: blagi "spoiler" – kasnije doznajemo da ih je napustila na tri godine.

Čitatelji pamte da je Leda u romanu rekla "Neizgovoreno govori više od izgovorenog", a Gyllenhaal je upamtila te riječi i prenijela ih na film koji znade biti dobrodošlo intrigantno nedokučiv poput knjige, toliko da na svakom čitatelju/gledatelju ostaje da sam između redaka pročita/sagleda pomalo misteriozni lik Lede i širu sliku. Još je jedna Ledina rečenica iz knjige značajna za Gyllenhalličin pristup adaptaciji: "Najteže je govoriti o onome što ni sami ne možemo razumjeti".

Ipak, "The Lost Daughter" nije "Mulholland Drive", "Donnie Darko" ili "Inception". Film (i knjiga) govori o majkama i kćerkama, majčinstvu, ulogama roditelja, svim užicima, ali i tjeskobama koje s time dolaze u paketu i mogu početi gušiti osobu željnu karijere i slobode, što Gyllenhaal efektno dočarava u klaustrofobičnom prošlosnom segmentu filma, kad mladu majku Ledu, u nesretnom braku, glumi sjajna Jessie Buckley ("Vrijeme je da okončam ovo").

"Ponekad mislim da se ne mogu o njima brinuti", kaže Leda u flešbekovima prošlosti koje se njezina starija verzija prisjeća. Flešbekovi su više od pukih flešbekova u formi fragmenata sjećanja i takoreći se odmotavaju kao ravnopravna paralelna radnja s onom u sadašnjosti, gdje Leda prepoznaje sebe u Nini, a svoje kćerke u Eleni koja se prema lutki odnosi kao da joj je mama.

Kad Elena jednog dana na plaži nestane, instinktivno je pronalazi upravo Leda, ponašajući se da je već prošla nešto slično sa svojom djecom, ali uzima njezinu lutku kao kratkotrajni nadomjestak za izgubljenu kćer. Lutka koja sjedi na pijesku simbolično oslikava naslovnicu knjige, dok plakat filma krasi Leda sjedeći na pješčanoj plaži. "Mračna kći", knjiga i film, gradi kule u pijesku majčinstva.

Nominacije za Zlatne globuse
"Mračna kći" je osvojila nagradu za scenarij na Venecijanskom festivalu, nominirana je i za dva Zlatna globusa (ženska uloga, režija), a mogla bi lako ostvariti i slične nominacije na Oscarima. U filmu su sporedne uloge odigrali i veteran Ed Harris, Peter Sarsgaard (partner Maggie Gyllenhaal u stvarnom životu), Dagmara Dominczyk, Jack Farthing ("Spencer"), Oliver Jackson-Cohen ("Nevidljivi čovjek"), Paul Mescal (serija "Normal People")...
