Široka pleća Jamesa Caana, koja su ga načinila dostojnim negativcem za Schwarzeneggera u "Brisaču", mogla su bez problema iznijeti neki akcijski film. Samo je bilo pitanje vremena kad će zvijezda "Kuma" odigrati ulogu nekog junaka. Dogodilo se to sredinom sedamdesetih s "Rollerballom" (1975.), nedugo nakon uspjeha Coppolina remek-djela, a nekoliko godina prije "Lopova" Michaela Manna. No, "Rollerball" nije bio običan akcijski film iz najmanje dva razloga.

Prvo, bio je to jedan od prvih vizionarskih akcijskih filmova futurističkog i znanstveno-fantastičnog prefiksa koji je preuzeo štafetu od "Planeta majmuna" i položio temelje omiljenog hibridnog žanra u osamdesetima ("sci-fi action thriller") kakvog su potom izgradili budući kultni klasici, od "Bijega iz New Yorka" i "Pobješnjelog Maxa 2", preko "Istrebljivača", "Terminatora" i "RoboCopa", do "Trkača" kao mlađeg brata "Rollerballa".

Drugo, "Rollerball" je imao društveno-političku oštricu iz prilično oštrog pera scenarista Williama Harrisona kao mnogi distopijski SF-ovi sedamdesetih prije faze "Ratova zvijezda", tipa "THX1138", "Paklena naranča" i "Zeleno sunce", ali i akcijski filmovi poput "Prljavog Harryja" i "Francuske veze", od kojih je preuzeo parabolu o nasilju i/li represiji, tj. njihovu kritiku u formi titularne hipernasilne igre budućnosti.

Igra je predstavljena u upečatljivoj 15-minutnoj uvodnoj sekvenciji, režiranoj poput televizijskog prijenosa neke tekme, u ovom slučaju ogleda timova Houstona i Madrida. Redatelj Norman Jewison ("U vrelini noći") snima cirkularnu arenu kao Stanley Kubrick dozivajući njegovu režiju "2001" i "Clockwork Orange" upošljavanjem preciznih geometrijskih kadrova i klasične simfonijske glazbe.

Arena je moderni rimski Kolosej za gladijatorsku igru koja scenografsko-igrački spaja fliper (ispaljivanje metalne lopte) i rulet (kružna kupola nalik ruletskom kotaču) s rolanjem, američkim nogometom i hokejom. "Rollerball" je sve to, samo dvostruko nasilniji i smrtonosniji ekstremni kontaktni sport, igra bez kazni, borba na život i smrt. Metalna lopta može koštati igrače/rolere života ili tjelesnih ozljeda, kao i njihovi protivnici s oštricama na rukavicama dok je hvataju jurcajući jedni za drugima po stazi na rolama ili motociklima.

Takve stvari uzbuđuju navijačku, krvožednu publiku u areni i neakcijski redatelj Jewison ("Afera Thomasa Crowna", "Isus Krist Superstar", "F.I.S.T.", "Opčinjena Mjesecom") akcijski poprilično vješto oslikava razmjere tog uzbuđenja, ali i polako razotkriva sociopolitički kontekst filma ambijentiranog u 2018. godinu, kad zasvira "korporativna himna" i gledatelji ustanu sa sjedala, a igrači se ukipe na mjestu.

Korporacije vladaju svijetom "Rollerballa" i kontroliraju ga nakon što su "nacije bankrotirale", počevši od TV zabave. One donose odluke na globalnom nivou u svijetu u kojem nema bolesti i siromaštva jer korporativno društvo se brine o svemu, uključujući i to koga ćete oženiti i koliko dugo ćete ostati s partnericom prije nego vam je zamijene.

Najnovija odluka izvršnog odbora korporacije jest da se najpopularniji igrač tima Houston i najveći "celebrity" u svijetu "rollerballa", "visoki atleta" Jonathan E (vrlo uvjerljivi Caan), treba povući i umiroviti nakon što je "deset godina igrao ovu igru".

Nepobjedivom igraču to prenosi korporacijski šef Bartholomew (John Houseman). Međutim, Jonathanu je polako puna kapa da se povinjuje kontroli korporacije koja mu je oduzela suprugu Ellu (Maud Adams, Bond-djevojka iz "Čovjeka sa zlatnim pištoljem" i "Octopussy"). On ne želi prestati igrati i počinje preispitivati odluku izvršnika, odnosno razloge svoga umirovljenja.

"Ne razumijem tvoj otpor", govori Bartholomew. "Nešto se događa s igrom, ne žele da znam", sumnjičav je Jonathan. Preispitivanje će ga dovesti u sukob s korporacijom koja pokušava izigrati najvećeg igrača. Pojedinac protiv sustava, tj. borba za pravo na individualnosti i slobodnu volju unutar nadgledajućeg "big brotherskog" društva/globalnog kapitalizma provodne su niti Jewisonova filma.

Kad se pobuni protiv nadređenih, Jonathan prkosi sustavu i prijeti poljuljati temelje njegova poretka, oduzeti kontrolu vladajućim korporativnim strukturama koje su osmislile igru, "društveni spektakl", da "demonstrira uzaludnost individualnog truda". Jonathan je postao veći od igre, iako to nijedan igrač ne bi smio postati, stoga ga korporacija vidi kao direktnu prijetnju.

"Boje te se svi do vrha", govore junaku. Jonathan je dobar kad u ime korporacije zabavlja mase pred TV ekranima i zadovoljava njihovu žeđ za krvlju dok igra smrtonosnu igru, ali ne i ako bi tim istim masama mogao biti uzor za propitivanje sistema i ustanak protiv autoriteta, kao Ben Richards u "Running Manu" i Maximus u "Gladijatoru".

Jedno je "entertainment", igra kakva ima "društvenu potrebu" i funkcionira kao distrakcija od zbilje i restrikcije vladinih informacija, opijum za mase koje vole živjeti u blaženom neznanju. Nešto sasvim drugo je "statement" kakav podrazumijeva Jonathanov čin pobune u filmu s upozoravajućom (tele)vizijom korporativna društva budućnosti 40-ak godina unaprijed, naše sadašnjosti u kojoj "entertainment" služi za gledanje i nadgledanje, kontrolu gledatelja/društva.

Budućnost iz "Rollerballa" ne samo da više nije daleko od sadašnjosti, već je postala prošlost. Godina 2018. je iza nas i budućnost "Rollerballa" je (pre)stigla sadašnjost, a počela je kucati na vrata i ranije, praktički bila već tu. Jučer je "Rollerball" bio znanstvena fantastika, danas (i sutra) je stvarnost. Počeli smo živjeti u svijetu ovog filma onog trenutka kad su nasilni sportovi (UFC) i reality showovi ("Survivor") na "widescreen" televizijama postali naš "Rollerball". Bila je to finalna potvrda da je budućnost sadašnjost.

Iste godine James Caan je glumio u još jednom akcijskom filmu, "Eliti ubojica" majstora akcije Sama Peckinpaha ("Divlja horda", "Bijeg").

Široka pleća Jamesa Caana, koja su ga načinila dostojnim negativcem za Schwarzeneggera u "Brisaču", mogla su bez problema iznijeti neki akcijski film. Samo je bilo pitanje vremena kad će zvijezda "Kuma" odigrati ulogu nekog junaka. Dogodilo se to sredinom sedamdesetih s "Rollerballom" (1975.), nedugo nakon uspjeha Coppolina remek-djela, a nekoliko godina prije "Lopova" Michaela Manna. No, "Rollerball" nije bio običan akcijski film iz najmanje dva razloga.

Prvo, bio je to jedan od prvih vizionarskih akcijskih filmova futurističkog i znanstveno-fantastičnog prefiksa koji je preuzeo štafetu od "Planeta majmuna" i položio temelje omiljenog hibridnog žanra u osamdesetima ("sci-fi action thriller") kakvog su potom izgradili budući kultni klasici, od "Bijega iz New Yorka" i "Pobješnjelog Maxa 2", preko "Istrebljivača", "Terminatora" i "RoboCopa", do "Trkača" kao mlađeg brata "Rollerballa".

Drugo, "Rollerball" je imao društveno-političku oštricu iz prilično oštrog pera scenarista Williama Harrisona kao mnogi distopijski SF-ovi sedamdesetih prije faze "Ratova zvijezda", tipa "THX1138", "Paklena naranča" i "Zeleno sunce", ali i akcijski filmovi poput "Prljavog Harryja" i "Francuske veze", od kojih je preuzeo parabolu o nasilju i/li represiji, tj. njihovu kritiku u formi titularne hipernasilne igre budućnosti.

Igra je predstavljena u upečatljivoj 15-minutnoj uvodnoj sekvenciji, režiranoj poput televizijskog prijenosa neke tekme, u ovom slučaju ogleda timova Houstona i Madrida. Redatelj Norman Jewison ("U vrelini noći") snima cirkularnu arenu kao Stanley Kubrick dozivajući njegovu režiju "2001" i "Clockwork Orange" upošljavanjem preciznih geometrijskih kadrova i klasične simfonijske glazbe.

Arena je moderni rimski Kolosej za gladijatorsku igru koja scenografsko-igrački spaja fliper (ispaljivanje metalne lopte) i rulet (kružna kupola nalik ruletskom kotaču) s rolanjem, američkim nogometom i hokejom. "Rollerball" je sve to, samo dvostruko nasilniji i smrtonosniji ekstremni kontaktni sport, igra bez kazni, borba na život i smrt. Metalna lopta može koštati igrače/rolere života ili tjelesnih ozljeda, kao i njihovi protivnici s oštricama na rukavicama dok je hvataju jurcajući jedni za drugima po stazi na rolama ili motociklima.

Takve stvari uzbuđuju navijačku, krvožednu publiku u areni i neakcijski redatelj Jewison ("Afera Thomasa Crowna", "Isus Krist Superstar", "F.I.S.T.", "Opčinjena Mjesecom") akcijski poprilično vješto oslikava razmjere tog uzbuđenja, ali i polako razotkriva sociopolitički kontekst filma ambijentiranog u 2018. godinu, kad zasvira "korporativna himna" i gledatelji ustanu sa sjedala, a igrači se ukipe na mjestu.

Korporacije vladaju svijetom "Rollerballa" i kontroliraju ga nakon što su "nacije bankrotirale", počevši od TV zabave. One donose odluke na globalnom nivou u svijetu u kojem nema bolesti i siromaštva jer korporativno društvo se brine o svemu, uključujući i to koga ćete oženiti i koliko dugo ćete ostati s partnericom prije nego vam je zamijene.

Najnovija odluka izvršnog odbora korporacije jest da se najpopularniji igrač tima Houston i najveći "celebrity" u svijetu "rollerballa", "visoki atleta" Jonathan E (vrlo uvjerljivi Caan), treba povući i umiroviti nakon što je "deset godina igrao ovu igru".

Nepobjedivom igraču to prenosi korporacijski šef Bartholomew (John Houseman). Međutim, Jonathanu je polako puna kapa da se povinjuje kontroli korporacije koja mu je oduzela suprugu Ellu (Maud Adams, Bond-djevojka iz "Čovjeka sa zlatnim pištoljem" i "Octopussy"). On ne želi prestati igrati i počinje preispitivati odluku izvršnika, odnosno razloge svoga umirovljenja.

"Ne razumijem tvoj otpor", govori Bartholomew. "Nešto se događa s igrom, ne žele da znam", sumnjičav je Jonathan. Preispitivanje će ga dovesti u sukob s korporacijom koja pokušava izigrati najvećeg igrača. Pojedinac protiv sustava, tj. borba za pravo na individualnosti i slobodnu volju unutar nadgledajućeg "big brotherskog" društva/globalnog kapitalizma provodne su niti Jewisonova filma.

Kad se pobuni protiv nadređenih, Jonathan prkosi sustavu i prijeti poljuljati temelje njegova poretka, oduzeti kontrolu vladajućim korporativnim strukturama koje su osmislile igru, "društveni spektakl", da "demonstrira uzaludnost individualnog truda". Jonathan je postao veći od igre, iako to nijedan igrač ne bi smio postati, stoga ga korporacija vidi kao direktnu prijetnju.

"Boje te se svi do vrha", govore junaku. Jonathan je dobar kad u ime korporacije zabavlja mase pred TV ekranima i zadovoljava njihovu žeđ za krvlju dok igra smrtonosnu igru, ali ne i ako bi tim istim masama mogao biti uzor za propitivanje sistema i ustanak protiv autoriteta, kao Ben Richards u "Running Manu" i Maximus u "Gladijatoru".

Jedno je "entertainment", igra kakva ima "društvenu potrebu" i funkcionira kao distrakcija od zbilje i restrikcije vladinih informacija, opijum za mase koje vole živjeti u blaženom neznanju. Nešto sasvim drugo je "statement" kakav podrazumijeva Jonathanov čin pobune u filmu s upozoravajućom (tele)vizijom korporativna društva budućnosti 40-ak godina unaprijed, naše sadašnjosti u kojoj "entertainment" služi za gledanje i nadgledanje, kontrolu gledatelja/društva.

Budućnost iz "Rollerballa" ne samo da više nije daleko od sadašnjosti, već je postala prošlost. Godina 2018. je iza nas i budućnost "Rollerballa" je (pre)stigla sadašnjost, a počela je kucati na vrata i ranije, praktički bila već tu. Jučer je "Rollerball" bio znanstvena fantastika, danas (i sutra) je stvarnost. Počeli smo živjeti u svijetu ovog filma onog trenutka kad su nasilni sportovi (UFC) i reality showovi ("Survivor") na "widescreen" televizijama postali naš "Rollerball". Bila je to finalna potvrda da je budućnost sadašnjost.
