Maurice Tillet rođen je 1903. u Rusiji od roditelja Francuza koji su došli u drugu zemlju zaraditi za život. Kao dijete ostao je bez oca, a nedugo nakon toga dogodila se Oktobarska revolucija zbog koje se njegova majka odlučila vratiti u domovinu.
Njegovi bliski prijatelji tvrdili su da je bio izuzetno lijepo dijete te da iz tog razdoblja potječe i dio njegovog nadimka - Anđeo. No, oko svoje 18. ili 19. godine Maurice je primijetio da su mu udovi počeli oticati. Odjednom su mu naglo počele rasti ruke, noge, pa čak i glava. Bili su to jasni znakovi akromegalije, što su brzo potvrdili liječnici.
Prvi znakovi akromegalije
Znali su već i u to vrijeme da je to uzrokovano tumorom hipofize, ali nisu imali lijek za to. Izgled nekad zgodnog momka nastavio se mijenjati nagore. To ga je odvratilo od studija prava na Sveučilištu u Toulouseu, pa se pridružio francuskoj mornarici u kojoj je kao inženjer proveo u službi sljedećih pet godina.
"Možda sam s takvim licem mogao postati odvjetnik, ali moj magareći glas jednostavno je nemoguće slušati. Umjesto toga, otišao sam u mornaricu", objasnio je svojedobno Tillet u razgovoru s novinarima.

Maurice postaje "Francuski anđeo"
Godine 1937. Maurice je slučajno upoznao profesionalnog hrvača Carla Pogella. Naime, kako mu se izgled tada već uvelike bio promijenio, Pogello mu je na ulici na francuskom postavio pitanje o tom očiglednom problemu. Thiele mu je na to ljutito odbrusio i opsovao na ruskom. Carl se odmah nadovezao na istom jeziku. Ispostavilo se da je on prije 1917. živio u Sankt Peterburgu.
Od tog trenutka njih dvojica su se zbližili i postali nerazdvojni prijatelji. Carl je čak uvjerio Mauricea da se također počne baviti hrvanjem. Zajedno su se preselili u Pariz, gdje su počeli trenirati. U sljedeće dvije godine Maurice je postigao veliki uspjeh. No, život ga je još jednom odlučio iznenaditi, kao i cijeli svijet. Izbio je Drugi svjetski rat. Shvativši da neće napraviti karijeru u Europi, Maurice je sa svojim trenerom otišao u SAD.
U Bostonu je ubrzo dobio nadimak Francuski anđeo i uz pomoć menadžera Paula Bowsera stekao veliku popularnost. Osim neobičnog izgleda, Maurice je imao i zavidnu vještinu: 19 mjeseci zaredom nije izgubio niti jedan meč. Ubrzo su se na sceni pojavili brojni njegovi imitatori iz različitih zemalja, a protiv nekih se Tillet i borio.

Bio je svjetski prvak u teškoj kategoriji Američke hrvačke asocijacije od 1940. i ponovno je osvojio naslov u Bostonu 1944. godine. No, zbog uznapredovale bolesti njegova je uspješna karijera kratko trajala.
Zdravlje mu se pogoršava
Do 1945. Morris je prestao biti nezaustavljiv. Počeo je rjeđe nastupati, a kad bi izašao na borbu - gubio bi. Glavobolje i slab vid nastavili su se pogoršavati i 1953. Maurice se borio posljednji put te izgubio.
Već sljedeće godine zdravstveno stanje mu je bilo izrazito loše, a ubrzo su ga počeli mučiti i srčani problemi. Možda bi poživio još malo da njegov prijatelj i trener Carl Pogello nije iznenada preminuo od raka pluća. Kada je čuo vijest, Morris se uhvatio za prsa i umro u dobi od 50 godina.
Prijatelji su zajedno pokopani, a na grobu im je podignut spomenik.
Iako nikad nije potvrđeno, govori se da je animirani lik Shrek napravljen prema Tilletovoj slici.

Maurice Tillet rođen je 1903. u Rusiji od roditelja Francuza koji su došli u drugu zemlju zaraditi za život. Kao dijete ostao je bez oca, a nedugo nakon toga dogodila se Oktobarska revolucija zbog koje se njegova majka odlučila vratiti u domovinu.
Njegovi bliski prijatelji tvrdili su da je bio izuzetno lijepo dijete te da iz tog razdoblja potječe i dio njegovog nadimka - Anđeo. No, oko svoje 18. ili 19. godine Maurice je primijetio da su mu udovi počeli oticati. Odjednom su mu naglo počele rasti ruke, noge, pa čak i glava. Bili su to jasni znakovi akromegalije, što su brzo potvrdili liječnici.
Prvi znakovi akromegalije
Znali su već i u to vrijeme da je to uzrokovano tumorom hipofize, ali nisu imali lijek za to. Izgled nekad zgodnog momka nastavio se mijenjati nagore. To ga je odvratilo od studija prava na Sveučilištu u Toulouseu, pa se pridružio francuskoj mornarici u kojoj je kao inženjer proveo u službi sljedećih pet godina.
"Možda sam s takvim licem mogao postati odvjetnik, ali moj magareći glas jednostavno je nemoguće slušati. Umjesto toga, otišao sam u mornaricu", objasnio je svojedobno Tillet u razgovoru s novinarima.

Maurice postaje "Francuski anđeo"
Godine 1937. Maurice je slučajno upoznao profesionalnog hrvača Carla Pogella. Naime, kako mu se izgled tada već uvelike bio promijenio, Pogello mu je na ulici na francuskom postavio pitanje o tom očiglednom problemu. Thiele mu je na to ljutito odbrusio i opsovao na ruskom. Carl se odmah nadovezao na istom jeziku. Ispostavilo se da je on prije 1917. živio u Sankt Peterburgu.
Od tog trenutka njih dvojica su se zbližili i postali nerazdvojni prijatelji. Carl je čak uvjerio Mauricea da se također počne baviti hrvanjem. Zajedno su se preselili u Pariz, gdje su počeli trenirati. U sljedeće dvije godine Maurice je postigao veliki uspjeh. No, život ga je još jednom odlučio iznenaditi, kao i cijeli svijet. Izbio je Drugi svjetski rat. Shvativši da neće napraviti karijeru u Europi, Maurice je sa svojim trenerom otišao u SAD.
U Bostonu je ubrzo dobio nadimak Francuski anđeo i uz pomoć menadžera Paula Bowsera stekao veliku popularnost. Osim neobičnog izgleda, Maurice je imao i zavidnu vještinu: 19 mjeseci zaredom nije izgubio niti jedan meč. Ubrzo su se na sceni pojavili brojni njegovi imitatori iz različitih zemalja, a protiv nekih se Tillet i borio.

Bio je svjetski prvak u teškoj kategoriji Američke hrvačke asocijacije od 1940. i ponovno je osvojio naslov u Bostonu 1944. godine. No, zbog uznapredovale bolesti njegova je uspješna karijera kratko trajala.
Zdravlje mu se pogoršava
Do 1945. Morris je prestao biti nezaustavljiv. Počeo je rjeđe nastupati, a kad bi izašao na borbu - gubio bi. Glavobolje i slab vid nastavili su se pogoršavati i 1953. Maurice se borio posljednji put te izgubio.
Već sljedeće godine zdravstveno stanje mu je bilo izrazito loše, a ubrzo su ga počeli mučiti i srčani problemi. Možda bi poživio još malo da njegov prijatelj i trener Carl Pogello nije iznenada preminuo od raka pluća. Kada je čuo vijest, Morris se uhvatio za prsa i umro u dobi od 50 godina.
Prijatelji su zajedno pokopani, a na grobu im je podignut spomenik.
Iako nikad nije potvrđeno, govori se da je animirani lik Shrek napravljen prema Tilletovoj slici.
