Ranije rijetka genetska mutacija, zbog koje neki slonovi nisu imali kljove, postala je veoma česta u nekim grupama afričkih slonova, piše The Guardian.

Slonovi u nacionalnom parku Gorongosa u Mozambiku posljednjih se godina često rađaju bez kljova. 

Znanstvenici su otkrili da je navedena genetska modifikacija nastala zbog krivolova slonovače. Naime, životinje su se evolucijski prilagodile kako više ne bi bile plijen krivolovaca. 

Tijekom građanskog rata u Mozambiku između 1977. i 1992. godine ubijeno je 90 posto populacije slonova, budući da je rat bio financiran novcem od prodaje slonovače.

Nekoliko generacija kasnije, efekti su i dalje vidljivi na grupi od oko 700 slonova koji žive u nacionalnom parku.

- Ova studija dokazuje da je to više od samo brojeva. Utjecaj ljudi doslovno mijenja anatomiju životinja - rekao je voditelj istraživanja Robert Pringle s Odjela za ekologiju i evolucijsku biologiju na Sveučilištu Princeton u New Jerseyu.

Pringe je rekao kako ga je osobito zaintrigirao fenomen ženki bez kljova, budući da se ovaj genetski uzorak rjeđe viđa kod mužjaka.

Mutacija gena štiti ženke slonova od krivolova, ali je fatalna za muške slonove, koji se ne razvijaju pravilno u materici.

Otprilike polovica mladunaca muških slonova s majkom bez kljova naslijedit će tu genetsku abnormalnost, što znači da krda slonova u kojima je bilo puno krivolova mogu na kraju ozbiljno osiromašiti mušku populaciju, rekao je Pringle.

Ranije rijetka genetska mutacija, zbog koje neki slonovi nisu imali kljove, postala je veoma česta u nekim grupama afričkih slonova, piše The Guardian.

Slonovi u nacionalnom parku Gorongosa u Mozambiku posljednjih se godina često rađaju bez kljova. 

Znanstvenici su otkrili da je navedena genetska modifikacija nastala zbog krivolova slonovače. Naime, životinje su se evolucijski prilagodile kako više ne bi bile plijen krivolovaca. 

Tijekom građanskog rata u Mozambiku između 1977. i 1992. godine ubijeno je 90 posto populacije slonova, budući da je rat bio financiran novcem od prodaje slonovače.

Nekoliko generacija kasnije, efekti su i dalje vidljivi na grupi od oko 700 slonova koji žive u nacionalnom parku.

- Ova studija dokazuje da je to više od samo brojeva. Utjecaj ljudi doslovno mijenja anatomiju životinja - rekao je voditelj istraživanja Robert Pringle s Odjela za ekologiju i evolucijsku biologiju na Sveučilištu Princeton u New Jerseyu.

Pringe je rekao kako ga je osobito zaintrigirao fenomen ženki bez kljova, budući da se ovaj genetski uzorak rjeđe viđa kod mužjaka.

Mutacija gena štiti ženke slonova od krivolova, ali je fatalna za muške slonove, koji se ne razvijaju pravilno u materici.

Otprilike polovica mladunaca muških slonova s majkom bez kljova naslijedit će tu genetsku abnormalnost, što znači da krda slonova u kojima je bilo puno krivolova mogu na kraju ozbiljno osiromašiti mušku populaciju, rekao je Pringle.

Ranije rijetka genetska mutacija, zbog koje neki slonovi nisu imali kljove, postala je veoma česta u nekim grupama afričkih slonova, piše The Guardian.

Slonovi u nacionalnom parku Gorongosa u Mozambiku posljednjih se godina često rađaju bez kljova. 

Znanstvenici su otkrili da je navedena genetska modifikacija nastala zbog krivolova slonovače. Naime, životinje su se evolucijski prilagodile kako više ne bi bile plijen krivolovaca. 

Tijekom građanskog rata u Mozambiku između 1977. i 1992. godine ubijeno je 90 posto populacije slonova, budući da je rat bio financiran novcem od prodaje slonovače.

Nekoliko generacija kasnije, efekti su i dalje vidljivi na grupi od oko 700 slonova koji žive u nacionalnom parku.
