Sepsa je izravno povezana sa smrću 11 milijuna ljudi u svijetu 2017., što je skoro dvostruko više nego što se ranije procjenjivalo, pokazuje najnovija studija.
To znači da sepsa izaziva svaku petu smrt diljem svijeta, navode znanstvenici u studiji objavljenoj u medicinskom časopisu Lancet, prenosi AFP.
Do sepse dolazi kada organi oboljele osobe prestanu normalno funkcionirati, što je posljedica nekontroliranog imunološkog odgovora na infekciju.
Čak i ako ne usmrti, sepsa može izazvati dugogodišnje posljedice.
Oko 85 posto slučajeva smrti zbog sepse u 2017. u zemljama je s niskim ili srednjim prihodima, a najviša stopa zabilježena je u subsaharskoj Africi, na Južnom Pacifiku i u Aziji.
Najteže su bila pogođena djeca do pet godina starosti, na koje se odnosi 40 posto ukupnih slučajeva.
"Uzbunila nas je činjenica da je sepsa uzrok smrti mnogo češće nego što se ranije procjenjivalo, pogotovo stoga što je riječ o stanju koje se može prevenirati i liječiti", kazao je jedan od autora studije Mohsen Naghavi, profesor na Institutu za procjenu zdravlja u državi Washington.
Ranije globalne procjene stope smrtnosti uzrokovane sepsom oslanjale su se na podatke prikupljene u bolnicama u zemljama srednjih i visokih prihoda.
U Sjedinjenim Državama sepsa je najčešći uzrok smrti tijekom boravka u bolnici, što predstavlja trošak od preko 24 milijarde dolara godišnje.
Rezultat toga je da su zanemareni slučajevi do kojih je dolazilo izvan bolnica, posebice u zemljama s nižim prihodima, navode autori studije.
Kako bi došli do preciznijih brojki, Naghavi i kolege analizirali su sveobuhvatnu studiju Global Burden of Disease koja prati 282 različita primarna uzroka smrti.
Sepsa, koja nije među njima, opisana je kao tzv. "posredan" uzrok smrti koje izaziva rak, upala pluća ili dijabetes.
Nova studija utvrdila je da su broj slučajeva sepse i stopa smrtnosti smanjeni u odnosu na 1990., kada je registrirano 60 milijuna slučajeva sepse i 15,7 milijuna smrti.
Autori studije založili su se za to da se pažnja posebice posveti prevenciji sepse među novorođenom djecom te na praćenje antimikrobne rezistencije.
"Radila sam u Ugandi i susretala se svaki dan sa sepsom", kazala je glavna autorica studije Kristina Rudd s medicinskog fakulteta sveučilišta u Pittsburghu, poručivši kako nije moguće ostvarivati napredak u borbi s problemom ako se ne znaju njegovi razmjeri.
"Pogledate li bilo koju listu 10 glavnih uzroka smrti, sepsa nije na njima jer se ne vodi kao uzrok", kazala je Rudd.

Sepsa je izravno povezana sa smrću 11 milijuna ljudi u svijetu 2017., što je skoro dvostruko više nego što se ranije procjenjivalo, pokazuje najnovija studija.
To znači da sepsa izaziva svaku petu smrt diljem svijeta, navode znanstvenici u studiji objavljenoj u medicinskom časopisu Lancet, prenosi AFP.
Do sepse dolazi kada organi oboljele osobe prestanu normalno funkcionirati, što je posljedica nekontroliranog imunološkog odgovora na infekciju.
Čak i ako ne usmrti, sepsa može izazvati dugogodišnje posljedice.
Oko 85 posto slučajeva smrti zbog sepse u 2017. u zemljama je s niskim ili srednjim prihodima, a najviša stopa zabilježena je u subsaharskoj Africi, na Južnom Pacifiku i u Aziji.
Najteže su bila pogođena djeca do pet godina starosti, na koje se odnosi 40 posto ukupnih slučajeva.
"Uzbunila nas je činjenica da je sepsa uzrok smrti mnogo češće nego što se ranije procjenjivalo, pogotovo stoga što je riječ o stanju koje se može prevenirati i liječiti", kazao je jedan od autora studije Mohsen Naghavi, profesor na Institutu za procjenu zdravlja u državi Washington.
Ranije globalne procjene stope smrtnosti uzrokovane sepsom oslanjale su se na podatke prikupljene u bolnicama u zemljama srednjih i visokih prihoda.
U Sjedinjenim Državama sepsa je najčešći uzrok smrti tijekom boravka u bolnici, što predstavlja trošak od preko 24 milijarde dolara godišnje.
Rezultat toga je da su zanemareni slučajevi do kojih je dolazilo izvan bolnica, posebice u zemljama s nižim prihodima, navode autori studije.
Kako bi došli do preciznijih brojki, Naghavi i kolege analizirali su sveobuhvatnu studiju Global Burden of Disease koja prati 282 različita primarna uzroka smrti.
Sepsa, koja nije među njima, opisana je kao tzv. "posredan" uzrok smrti koje izaziva rak, upala pluća ili dijabetes.
Nova studija utvrdila je da su broj slučajeva sepse i stopa smrtnosti smanjeni u odnosu na 1990., kada je registrirano 60 milijuna slučajeva sepse i 15,7 milijuna smrti.
Autori studije založili su se za to da se pažnja posebice posveti prevenciji sepse među novorođenom djecom te na praćenje antimikrobne rezistencije.
"Radila sam u Ugandi i susretala se svaki dan sa sepsom", kazala je glavna autorica studije Kristina Rudd s medicinskog fakulteta sveučilišta u Pittsburghu, poručivši kako nije moguće ostvarivati napredak u borbi s problemom ako se ne znaju njegovi razmjeri.
"Pogledate li bilo koju listu 10 glavnih uzroka smrti, sepsa nije na njima jer se ne vodi kao uzrok", kazala je Rudd.
