Priča o eksploziji reaktora u Ukrajini odjeknula je svijetom, a posljedice su dalekosežne. Međutim, postoje detalji koji su malo poznati, a katastrofalni ishod čine jasnijim, piše National Geographic. 

Nuklearna katastrofa u Černobilu dogodila se prije više od 3 desetljeća i dok većina ljudi zna da je do eksplozije reaktora došlo ljudskom krivnjom, manje se zna o okolnostima koje nadopunjuju razmjere katastrofe.

1. Količina zračenja jednaka Hirošimi?

Oko 30.000 ljudi bilo je u blizini reaktora u noći 26. travnja 1986., kada je došlo do eksplozije. Smatra se da su oni koji su bili izloženi zračenju u prosjeku preživjeli 45 rema (jedinica doze zračenja), a istu dozu zračenja primili su i oni koji su preživjeli pad atomske bombe na Hirošimu 1945. godine. Ove informacije mogu se pronaći u knjizi Richarda Muellera, pisca i profesora emeritusa fizike na Kalifornijskom sveučilištu Berkeley, "Fizika za buduće predsjednike: znanost iza naslova".

Zračenje od 45 rema nije dovoljno da izazove bolest, ali povećava rizik od raka za 1,8%. Procijenjeni rizik bi prouzročio rak u 500 slučajeva prema 6000 slučajeva koji se javljaju prirodno.

Međutim, istraživanje koje je objavila Agencija za atomsku energiju (IAEA) 2006. godine pokazalo je puno veći broj smrtnih slučajeva od raka. Izmjereno zračenje iznosilo je 10 milijuna rema, umjesto 45 rema, što je jednako 4000 oboljelih od raka.

2. Najveća šteta je završena unutar nekoliko tjedana od eksplozije

Početna eksplozija bila je ogromna, ali najveći učinak zračenja dogodio se u prvih nekoliko tjedana koji su uslijedili. Zračenje treba promatrati u fragmentima koji odlete kada jezgra eksplodira, kao i gelerima koji se odvajaju od bombe. Samo 15 minuta nakon eksplozije u Černobilu razina zračenja pala je na polovicu svoje početne vrijednosti, a kroz dane i tjedne samo se smanjivala, na manje od 1% nakon 3 mjeseca. Međutim, ostaci radijacije postoje i danas. Velik dio dima se popeo, a na ljudsku populaciju utjecao je samo postotak koji je ostao pri tlu, objašnjava profesor Mueller.

3. Poginuli su deseci vatrogasaca

Eksplozija, osim visoke razine radijacije, izazvala je i ogroman požar, a deseci vatrogasaca okončali su živote gašenjem požara i izravnim trovanjem radioaktivnim plinom.

Svaki je vatrogasac trenutačno bio izložen kvadrilijunu gama zraka - prodornoj vrsti zračenja koja se oslobađa iz nuklearnog oružja, poput iznimno jakih rendgenskih zraka. Oko 10 trilijuna gama zraka nalazi se u jednom remu zračenja.

Osoba koja primi dozu od 100 rem na cijeli organizam, vjerojatno neće ni primijetiti, jer je organizam sposoban sanirati štetu bez bolesti. S 200 linija zračenja moguće je trovanje, a učinci su slični onima kod pacijenata koji primaju kemoterapiju – gubitak kose, mučnina, letargija. U ovom slučaju, organizam se bori da popravi štetu, postavljajući prioritete. Ljudi koji dobiju oko 300 rema imaju najveće šanse umrijeti ako ne dobiju hitnu pomoć u obliku transfuzije krvi.

4. Nije bilo zaštitne konstrukcije

Černobil nije imao jedan vrlo važan zaštitni sustav – građevinu koja bi zaustavila radijaciju.

 Konstrukcija u obliku kupole, izrađena od betona i ojačana čelikom, dizajnirana da ograniči oslobađanje produkata fisije u slučaju nesreće, obvezan je sigurnosni sustav, prema američkoj nuklearnoj regulatornoj komisiji. Prema mišljenju stručnjaka, takva bi zgrada spasila sve živote izgubljene u nuklearnoj katastrofi u Černobilu.

5. Černobil je postao dom divljim životinjama

Nakon evakuacije ljudi, koja je uslijedila ubrzo nakon eksplozije, regiju je nastanio svijet divljih životinja. 

Los, srna, jelen i divlja svinja samo su neki od stanovnika ove zone isključene za ljudski život. Broj populacija ovih vrsta gotovo je jednak broju u obližnjim rezervatima koji se smatraju nezagađenim, pokazala je studija objavljena 2015. godine. Na ovom području posebno je rasprostranjena populacija vukova, ako se uzme u obzir da ih je sedam puta više nego u okolnim prirodnim rezervatima.

Iako ovi podaci ne znače da na divlje životinje povoljno utječe zračenje, izostanak ljudskih aktivnosti - krčenje šuma, lov, obrada tla i sl., pokazao se kao čimbenik koji utječe na populacije divljih životinja od nuklearne katastrofe, rekao je koordinator istraživanja i profesor zaštite okoliša, Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo, Jim Smith.

Priča o eksploziji reaktora u Ukrajini odjeknula je svijetom, a posljedice su dalekosežne. Međutim, postoje detalji koji su malo poznati, a katastrofalni ishod čine jasnijim, piše National Geographic. 

Nuklearna katastrofa u Černobilu dogodila se prije više od 3 desetljeća i dok većina ljudi zna da je do eksplozije reaktora došlo ljudskom krivnjom, manje se zna o okolnostima koje nadopunjuju razmjere katastrofe.

1. Količina zračenja jednaka Hirošimi?

Oko 30.000 ljudi bilo je u blizini reaktora u noći 26. travnja 1986., kada je došlo do eksplozije. Smatra se da su oni koji su bili izloženi zračenju u prosjeku preživjeli 45 rema (jedinica doze zračenja), a istu dozu zračenja primili su i oni koji su preživjeli pad atomske bombe na Hirošimu 1945. godine. Ove informacije mogu se pronaći u knjizi Richarda Muellera, pisca i profesora emeritusa fizike na Kalifornijskom sveučilištu Berkeley, "Fizika za buduće predsjednike: znanost iza naslova".

Zračenje od 45 rema nije dovoljno da izazove bolest, ali povećava rizik od raka za 1,8%. Procijenjeni rizik bi prouzročio rak u 500 slučajeva prema 6000 slučajeva koji se javljaju prirodno.

Međutim, istraživanje koje je objavila Agencija za atomsku energiju (IAEA) 2006. godine pokazalo je puno veći broj smrtnih slučajeva od raka. Izmjereno zračenje iznosilo je 10 milijuna rema, umjesto 45 rema, što je jednako 4000 oboljelih od raka.

2. Najveća šteta je završena unutar nekoliko tjedana od eksplozije

Početna eksplozija bila je ogromna, ali najveći učinak zračenja dogodio se u prvih nekoliko tjedana koji su uslijedili. Zračenje treba promatrati u fragmentima koji odlete kada jezgra eksplodira, kao i gelerima koji se odvajaju od bombe. Samo 15 minuta nakon eksplozije u Černobilu razina zračenja pala je na polovicu svoje početne vrijednosti, a kroz dane i tjedne samo se smanjivala, na manje od 1% nakon 3 mjeseca. Međutim, ostaci radijacije postoje i danas. Velik dio dima se popeo, a na ljudsku populaciju utjecao je samo postotak koji je ostao pri tlu, objašnjava profesor Mueller.

3. Poginuli su deseci vatrogasaca

Eksplozija, osim visoke razine radijacije, izazvala je i ogroman požar, a deseci vatrogasaca okončali su živote gašenjem požara i izravnim trovanjem radioaktivnim plinom.

Svaki je vatrogasac trenutačno bio izložen kvadrilijunu gama zraka - prodornoj vrsti zračenja koja se oslobađa iz nuklearnog oružja, poput iznimno jakih rendgenskih zraka. Oko 10 trilijuna gama zraka nalazi se u jednom remu zračenja.

Osoba koja primi dozu od 100 rem na cijeli organizam, vjerojatno neće ni primijetiti, jer je organizam sposoban sanirati štetu bez bolesti. S 200 linija zračenja moguće je trovanje, a učinci su slični onima kod pacijenata koji primaju kemoterapiju – gubitak kose, mučnina, letargija. U ovom slučaju, organizam se bori da popravi štetu, postavljajući prioritete. Ljudi koji dobiju oko 300 rema imaju najveće šanse umrijeti ako ne dobiju hitnu pomoć u obliku transfuzije krvi.

4. Nije bilo zaštitne konstrukcije

Černobil nije imao jedan vrlo važan zaštitni sustav – građevinu koja bi zaustavila radijaciju.

 Konstrukcija u obliku kupole, izrađena od betona i ojačana čelikom, dizajnirana da ograniči oslobađanje produkata fisije u slučaju nesreće, obvezan je sigurnosni sustav, prema američkoj nuklearnoj regulatornoj komisiji. Prema mišljenju stručnjaka, takva bi zgrada spasila sve živote izgubljene u nuklearnoj katastrofi u Černobilu.

5. Černobil je postao dom divljim životinjama

Nakon evakuacije ljudi, koja je uslijedila ubrzo nakon eksplozije, regiju je nastanio svijet divljih životinja. 

Los, srna, jelen i divlja svinja samo su neki od stanovnika ove zone isključene za ljudski život. Broj populacija ovih vrsta gotovo je jednak broju u obližnjim rezervatima koji se smatraju nezagađenim, pokazala je studija objavljena 2015. godine. Na ovom području posebno je rasprostranjena populacija vukova, ako se uzme u obzir da ih je sedam puta više nego u okolnim prirodnim rezervatima.

Iako ovi podaci ne znače da na divlje životinje povoljno utječe zračenje, izostanak ljudskih aktivnosti - krčenje šuma, lov, obrada tla i sl., pokazao se kao čimbenik koji utječe na populacije divljih životinja od nuklearne katastrofe, rekao je koordinator istraživanja i profesor zaštite okoliša, Ujedinjeno Kraljevstvo, Jim Smith.
