Ronald Reagan bio je američki predsjednik kada je Philipos Melaku-Bello prvi put počeo prosvjedovati ispred Bijele kuće. Još uvijek je tamo, punu 41 godinu, iz dana u dan prenoseći svoje poruke iz improviziranog skloništa prekrivenog ceradom i oblijepljenog znakovima koji zagovaraju mir, uništenje nuklearne industrije, stop ratovanju s dronovima, prestanak rata u Ukrajini i izraelsko-palestinskog sukoba... Ukratko - punu podršku ljudskim pravima.
Stalno netko zastane da se fotografira s njim, bilo turisti, bilo lokalci, pa bi netko rekao kako Melaku uživa status gotovo jednak onom kakav imaju sami američki predsjednici. Međutim, to njega nimalo ne impresionira i želi da njegove poruke govore umjesto njega.

Rođen je u Brazilu (iako je po narodnosti Amerikanac), bio je član punk rock benda, a 1987. nagazio je na minu u Ramallahu u Palestini, što ga je zauvijek prikovalo za invalidska kolica. Posljednjih sedam godina mjesto prosvjeda ispred Bijele kuće njegov je život, a na Lafayette trgu, javnom parku od sedam hektara koji se nalazi unutar predsjedničkog parka, sjeverno od rezidencije američkog predsjednika, tjedno tu provodi sate i sate, često i prespava u šatoru kojeg je podigao.
Svoju politiku opisuje kao anarhističku (životna filozofija koja za cilj ima stvaranje potpuno slobodnog društva, ravnopravnosti i nenasilja). Živi tako da se isključivo financira oslanjajući se na donacije pristaša koje ljudi ubacuju u njegov plastični spremnik.
Zajedno s njim ispred Bijele kuće prosvjeduju još dvojica aktivista. Bilo da su vani turobne zimske mećave ili sparni ljetni dani oni za cilj imaju samo jedno - prenijeti turistima, političarima i običnim prolaznicima poruku svjetskog mira.

Njihov prosvjed započeo je 1981. godine kada su se pridružili Williamu Thomasu, antiratnom aktivistu koji je proputovao svijet prosvjedujući protiv širenja nuklearnog oružja. Te je godine ispred Bijele kuće postavio natpis: ‘Traže se: Mudrost i poštenje.‘
U to je vrijeme Melaku-Bello bio na turneji s bendom Anarchistic Youth Brigade, a nakon što je nekoliko koncerata otkazano počeo je volontirati s Thomasom. Sada ispred rezidencije američkog predsjednika boravi radnim danima između 13 i 19 sati, vikendima i duže. U prošlosti je dnevno tamo znao provoditi i po 17 sati.
- Mora postojati sloboda i pravda za sve. Uvijek morate biti spremni za revoluciju. Želim mirnu revoluciju, ali ne žele je svi. Kršenja ljudskih prava su stvarnost na ovoj planeti i ja ih želim skorijeniti - kaže Melaku.

Čak i uz poruku bdijenja o univerzalnoj ljubavi, ovaj nekonvencionalni pokret nije bez svojih izazova, jer njihov prosvjed često zna prekinuti policija. Unatoč opasnostima i izazovima Melaku je strpljiv, no osjeća potrebu za poletom i energijom mlađih aktivista.

Dok je izvorni prosvjed sadržavao plakate samo o nuklearnom ratu, današnji se proširio i ističe važnost pokreta Black Lives Matter, osudu smrtne kazne, na tlu se mogu pronaći i zemljopisne karte izgubljenog palestinskog teritorija...
Melaku će nastaviti prosvjed sve dok mu to zdravlje bude dopuštalo.

Ronald Reagan bio je američki predsjednik kada je Philipos Melaku-Bello prvi put počeo prosvjedovati ispred Bijele kuće. Još uvijek je tamo, punu 41 godinu, iz dana u dan prenoseći svoje poruke iz improviziranog skloništa prekrivenog ceradom i oblijepljenog znakovima koji zagovaraju mir, uništenje nuklearne industrije, stop ratovanju s dronovima, prestanak rata u Ukrajini i izraelsko-palestinskog sukoba... Ukratko - punu podršku ljudskim pravima.
Stalno netko zastane da se fotografira s njim, bilo turisti, bilo lokalci, pa bi netko rekao kako Melaku uživa status gotovo jednak onom kakav imaju sami američki predsjednici. Međutim, to njega nimalo ne impresionira i želi da njegove poruke govore umjesto njega.

Rođen je u Brazilu (iako je po narodnosti Amerikanac), bio je član punk rock benda, a 1987. nagazio je na minu u Ramallahu u Palestini, što ga je zauvijek prikovalo za invalidska kolica. Posljednjih sedam godina mjesto prosvjeda ispred Bijele kuće njegov je život, a na Lafayette trgu, javnom parku od sedam hektara koji se nalazi unutar predsjedničkog parka, sjeverno od rezidencije američkog predsjednika, tjedno tu provodi sate i sate, često i prespava u šatoru kojeg je podigao.
Svoju politiku opisuje kao anarhističku (životna filozofija koja za cilj ima stvaranje potpuno slobodnog društva, ravnopravnosti i nenasilja). Živi tako da se isključivo financira oslanjajući se na donacije pristaša koje ljudi ubacuju u njegov plastični spremnik.
Zajedno s njim ispred Bijele kuće prosvjeduju još dvojica aktivista. Bilo da su vani turobne zimske mećave ili sparni ljetni dani oni za cilj imaju samo jedno - prenijeti turistima, političarima i običnim prolaznicima poruku svjetskog mira.

Njihov prosvjed započeo je 1981. godine kada su se pridružili Williamu Thomasu, antiratnom aktivistu koji je proputovao svijet prosvjedujući protiv širenja nuklearnog oružja. Te je godine ispred Bijele kuće postavio natpis: ‘Traže se: Mudrost i poštenje.‘
U to je vrijeme Melaku-Bello bio na turneji s bendom Anarchistic Youth Brigade, a nakon što je nekoliko koncerata otkazano počeo je volontirati s Thomasom. Sada ispred rezidencije američkog predsjednika boravi radnim danima između 13 i 19 sati, vikendima i duže. U prošlosti je dnevno tamo znao provoditi i po 17 sati.
- Mora postojati sloboda i pravda za sve. Uvijek morate biti spremni za revoluciju. Želim mirnu revoluciju, ali ne žele je svi. Kršenja ljudskih prava su stvarnost na ovoj planeti i ja ih želim skorijeniti - kaže Melaku.

Čak i uz poruku bdijenja o univerzalnoj ljubavi, ovaj nekonvencionalni pokret nije bez svojih izazova, jer njihov prosvjed često zna prekinuti policija. Unatoč opasnostima i izazovima Melaku je strpljiv, no osjeća potrebu za poletom i energijom mlađih aktivista.
- Svi smo mi sada stari aktivisti. Čekamo tvoju generaciju. Vaša generacija je cool - govori aludirajući time na kratke, ali dobro posjećene prosvjede koji su održani u D.C.-u nakon ruske invazije na Ukrajinu.

Dok je izvorni prosvjed sadržavao plakate samo o nuklearnom ratu, današnji se proširio i ističe važnost pokreta Black Lives Matter, osudu smrtne kazne, na tlu se mogu pronaći i zemljopisne karte izgubljenog palestinskog teritorija...
Melaku će nastaviti prosvjed sve dok mu to zdravlje bude dopuštalo.
