Količina plastičnog otpada koja završi u oceanima i ubija život u moru mogla bi se utrostručiti u sljedećih 20 godina, ne smanji li se značajno proizvodnja plastike, navodi se u istraživanju objavljenom ovaj tjedan.
Potrošnja plastike za jednokratnu uporabu povećala se za vrijeme pandemije koronavirusa, pa maske za lice i rukavice od lateksa svakodnevno plutaju azijskim plažama, objavila je nevladina organizacija International Solid Waste Association.
Odlagališta u svijetu zaprimaju rekordne količine plastičnih pakiranja za hranu i internetske ambalaže za dostavu.
Istraživanje koje su proveli znanstvenici i stručnjaci, a naručio The Pew Charitable Trusts i SYSTEMIQ, ponudilo je rješenja koja bi mogla smanjiti obujam plastike koja završi u oceanima za više od 80 posto.
Ne poduzme li se ništa, količina plastike koja svake godine odlazi u more porast će s 11 na 29 milijuna tona, ostavljajući kumulativnih 600 milijuna tona koje će oceani progutati do 2040. godine. To je jednako težini tri milijuna plavih kitova, navodi se u studiji objavljenoj u časopisu Science.
Onečišćenje plastikom utječe na sve, to nije "vaš, a ne moj problem", niti problem jedne zemlje, to je svačiji problem, rekla je jedna od autorica studije Winnie Lau iz kompanije Pew i dodala da će se stvari pogoršati ako se ništa ne učini.
Strategija izložena u studiji uključuje preusmjeravanje stotina milijardi dolara iz ulaganja u proizvodnju plastike u neke druge alternativne materijale, postrojenja za recikliranje i razvoj gospodarenja otpadom u zemljama u razvoju.
No to zahtjeva preokret u industriji koja ubrzano gradi nove kemijske pogone širom svijeta kako bi povećala proizvodnju plastike, budući da je klasična proizvodnja goriva sve više ugrožena razvojem ekoloških izvora energije.
Količina proizvedene plastike brzo se povećava nakon 1950. godine, kada je globalna proizvodnja iznosila 2 milijuna tona. U 2017. godini ta je brojka iznosila čak 348 milijuna tona, a očekuje se da će se udvostručiti do 2040. godine, procjenjuje studija.
Licemjerje proizvođača
Veliki proizvođači plastike, uključujući ExxonMobil, Dow i Chevron Phillips Chemical, izjavili su da se zalažu za borbu protiv onečišćenja plastikom, iako istodobno povećavaju proizvodnju. Projekti koje financiraju usredotočeni su uglavnom na čišćenje otpada.
Znanstvenici preporučuju se novu proizvodnju zakonski obeshrabri i osiguraju subvencije alternativnim rješenjima poput višekratne uporabe.
Industrija plastike istovremeno lobira protiv zabrana jednokratne plastike. Neki od najvećih njezinih kupaca su kompanije široke potrošnje poput Coca-Cole, PepsiCo, Nestle i Unilevers, koji su se redom obvezale da će u budućnosti za pakiranja koristiti veću količinu recikliranog materijala.
Studije pokazuju da bi vlade i kompanije bez značajne promjene takva stanja, do 2040. godine mogle smanjiti količinu plastike koja se sliva u oceane za svega sedam posto.
Da bi se slijevanje plastike u oceane smanjilo za 80 posto, potrebno je koristiti pakiranja od papira ili alternativne kompostabilne plastike, dok bi ambalaža trebala biti tako dizajnirana da se udvostruči udio materijala koji je moguće reciklirati za više nego dvostruko.
Neki su kritizirali spaljivanje, kemijsko recikliranje i postrojenja za proizvodnju plastičnih goriva, smatrajući da takve metode uključuju ispuštanje emisija ugljikovih spojeva, a pomažu i u održavanju proizvodnje plastike.
Umjesto toga "stavili bismo veći naglasak na potrebu smanjenja i zaustavljanja proizvodnje plastike", rekao je Von Hernandez iz nevladine organizacije Break Free from Plastic.
Omogući li se industriji ostvarenje projekcija rasta do 2050. godine, to bi učetvorostručilo proizvodnju u tom razdoblju i većina preporuka za smanjenje uporabe plastike bila bi besmislena", naglasio je Hernandez.

Količina plastičnog otpada koja završi u oceanima i ubija život u moru mogla bi se utrostručiti u sljedećih 20 godina, ne smanji li se značajno proizvodnja plastike, navodi se u istraživanju objavljenom ovaj tjedan.
Potrošnja plastike za jednokratnu uporabu povećala se za vrijeme pandemije koronavirusa, pa maske za lice i rukavice od lateksa svakodnevno plutaju azijskim plažama, objavila je nevladina organizacija International Solid Waste Association.
Odlagališta u svijetu zaprimaju rekordne količine plastičnih pakiranja za hranu i internetske ambalaže za dostavu.
Istraživanje koje su proveli znanstvenici i stručnjaci, a naručio The Pew Charitable Trusts i SYSTEMIQ, ponudilo je rješenja koja bi mogla smanjiti obujam plastike koja završi u oceanima za više od 80 posto.
Ne poduzme li se ništa, količina plastike koja svake godine odlazi u more porast će s 11 na 29 milijuna tona, ostavljajući kumulativnih 600 milijuna tona koje će oceani progutati do 2040. godine. To je jednako težini tri milijuna plavih kitova, navodi se u studiji objavljenoj u časopisu Science.
Onečišćenje plastikom utječe na sve, to nije "vaš, a ne moj problem", niti problem jedne zemlje, to je svačiji problem, rekla je jedna od autorica studije Winnie Lau iz kompanije Pew i dodala da će se stvari pogoršati ako se ništa ne učini.
Strategija izložena u studiji uključuje preusmjeravanje stotina milijardi dolara iz ulaganja u proizvodnju plastike u neke druge alternativne materijale, postrojenja za recikliranje i razvoj gospodarenja otpadom u zemljama u razvoju.
No to zahtjeva preokret u industriji koja ubrzano gradi nove kemijske pogone širom svijeta kako bi povećala proizvodnju plastike, budući da je klasična proizvodnja goriva sve više ugrožena razvojem ekoloških izvora energije.
Količina proizvedene plastike brzo se povećava nakon 1950. godine, kada je globalna proizvodnja iznosila 2 milijuna tona. U 2017. godini ta je brojka iznosila čak 348 milijuna tona, a očekuje se da će se udvostručiti do 2040. godine, procjenjuje studija.
Licemjerje proizvođača
Veliki proizvođači plastike, uključujući ExxonMobil, Dow i Chevron Phillips Chemical, izjavili su da se zalažu za borbu protiv onečišćenja plastikom, iako istodobno povećavaju proizvodnju. Projekti koje financiraju usredotočeni su uglavnom na čišćenje otpada.
Znanstvenici preporučuju se novu proizvodnju zakonski obeshrabri i osiguraju subvencije alternativnim rješenjima poput višekratne uporabe.
Industrija plastike istovremeno lobira protiv zabrana jednokratne plastike. Neki od najvećih njezinih kupaca su kompanije široke potrošnje poput Coca-Cole, PepsiCo, Nestle i Unilevers, koji su se redom obvezale da će u budućnosti za pakiranja koristiti veću količinu recikliranog materijala.
Studije pokazuju da bi vlade i kompanije bez značajne promjene takva stanja, do 2040. godine mogle smanjiti količinu plastike koja se sliva u oceane za svega sedam posto.
Da bi se slijevanje plastike u oceane smanjilo za 80 posto, potrebno je koristiti pakiranja od papira ili alternativne kompostabilne plastike, dok bi ambalaža trebala biti tako dizajnirana da se udvostruči udio materijala koji je moguće reciklirati za više nego dvostruko.
Neki su kritizirali spaljivanje, kemijsko recikliranje i postrojenja za proizvodnju plastičnih goriva, smatrajući da takve metode uključuju ispuštanje emisija ugljikovih spojeva, a pomažu i u održavanju proizvodnje plastike.
Umjesto toga "stavili bismo veći naglasak na potrebu smanjenja i zaustavljanja proizvodnje plastike", rekao je Von Hernandez iz nevladine organizacije Break Free from Plastic.
Omogući li se industriji ostvarenje projekcija rasta do 2050. godine, to bi učetvorostručilo proizvodnju u tom razdoblju i većina preporuka za smanjenje uporabe plastike bila bi besmislena", naglasio je Hernandez.
