Treći tenisač svijeta, 27-godišnji Austrijnac Dominic Thiem 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (6) pobjedom protiv 23-godišnjeg Nijemca Alexandera Zvereva u finalu US Opena postao je prvi igrač rođen u 1990-ima koji je osvojio "grand slam" naslov.

Thiem je do svog prvog naslova stigao u svom četvrtom nastupu u finalu, dosada je gubio u Roland Garrosu 2018. i 2019. od Rafaela Nadala te ove godine na Australian Openu od Novaka Đokovića, ostvarivši veliki preokret, izgubio je prva dva seta, a u petom je nadoknadio zaostatak od 3-5.

"Očekujem kako će od sada za mene biti lakše igrati na najvećim turnirima. U glavi mi je dosada bila misao kako sam imao veliku karijeru, bolju no što sam mogao sanjati, ali sve do danas mi je nedostajao jedan od najvećih ciljeva. Sada kad sam ga ostvario, nadam se kako ću biti opušteniji i igrati slobodnije na najvećim turnirima. Praktički sam čitav život posvetio tome da osvojim jedan 'grand slam' i sada sam uspio, a to je veliko postignuće kako za mene tako i za moju obitelj i stručni tim", kazao je Thiem.

Thiem je tako postao drugi Austrijanac koji je osvojio "grand slam" naslov pridruživši se Thomasu Musteru koji je osvojio Roland Garros 1995. Također, postao je peti igrač koji je nadoknadio zaostatak od 0-2 u setovima u finalu, a sva četiri dosadašnja slučaja dogodila su se u Roland Garrosu (Borg protiv Orantesa 1974., Lendl protiv McEnroea 1984., Agassi protiv Medvedeva 1999. i Gaudio protiv Corije 2004.).

Razočarani Zverev nakon svog prvog "grand slam" finala izjavio je kako je prerano za sagledavanje pozitivnih stvari koje je učinio u protekla dva tjedna u New Yorku.

"Bio sam toliko blizu da postanem 'grand slam' prvak. Dijelilo me nekoliko poena, ali ne mislim kako je ovo bila moja posljednja šansa. Vjerujem kako ću jednom ipak postati 'grand slam' pobjednik. Ključni je trenutak bio kada sam izgubio servis početkom trećeg seta, od tada je on počeo igrati puno bolje, a ja puno lošije. S obzirom da sam izgubio finale i to sa 7-6 u petom setu nakon što sam vodio 2-0 u setovima, naravno da mi sada nije lako koncentrirati se na pozitivne stvari. Trebat će mi dva-tri dana za to", izjavio je Zverev.

Zverevov dosadašnji najbolji rezultat u karijeri na "grand slam" turnirima bilo je polufinale ovogodišnjeg Australian Opena u kojemu je također izgubio od Thiema.

Treći tenisač svijeta, 27-godišnji Austrijnac Dominic Thiem 2-6, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (6) pobjedom protiv 23-godišnjeg Nijemca Alexandera Zvereva u finalu US Opena postao je prvi igrač rođen u 1990-ima koji je osvojio "grand slam" naslov.

Thiem je do svog prvog naslova stigao u svom četvrtom nastupu u finalu, dosada je gubio u Roland Garrosu 2018. i 2019. od Rafaela Nadala te ove godine na Australian Openu od Novaka Đokovića, ostvarivši veliki preokret, izgubio je prva dva seta, a u petom je nadoknadio zaostatak od 3-5.

"Očekujem kako će od sada za mene biti lakše igrati na najvećim turnirima. U glavi mi je dosada bila misao kako sam imao veliku karijeru, bolju no što sam mogao sanjati, ali sve do danas mi je nedostajao jedan od najvećih ciljeva. Sada kad sam ga ostvario, nadam se kako ću biti opušteniji i igrati slobodnije na najvećim turnirima. Praktički sam čitav život posvetio tome da osvojim jedan 'grand slam' i sada sam uspio, a to je veliko postignuće kako za mene tako i za moju obitelj i stručni tim", kazao je Thiem.

Thiem je tako postao drugi Austrijanac koji je osvojio "grand slam" naslov pridruživši se Thomasu Musteru koji je osvojio Roland Garros 1995. Također, postao je peti igrač koji je nadoknadio zaostatak od 0-2 u setovima u finalu, a sva četiri dosadašnja slučaja dogodila su se u Roland Garrosu (Borg protiv Orantesa 1974., Lendl protiv McEnroea 1984., Agassi protiv Medvedeva 1999. i Gaudio protiv Corije 2004.).

Razočarani Zverev nakon svog prvog "grand slam" finala izjavio je kako je prerano za sagledavanje pozitivnih stvari koje je učinio u protekla dva tjedna u New Yorku.

"Bio sam toliko blizu da postanem 'grand slam' prvak. Dijelilo me nekoliko poena, ali ne mislim kako je ovo bila moja posljednja šansa. Vjerujem kako ću jednom ipak postati 'grand slam' pobjednik. Ključni je trenutak bio kada sam izgubio servis početkom trećeg seta, od tada je on počeo igrati puno bolje, a ja puno lošije. S obzirom da sam izgubio finale i to sa 7-6 u petom setu nakon što sam vodio 2-0 u setovima, naravno da mi sada nije lako koncentrirati se na pozitivne stvari. Trebat će mi dva-tri dana za to", izjavio je Zverev.

Zverevov dosadašnji najbolji rezultat u karijeri na "grand slam" turnirima bilo je polufinale ovogodišnjeg Australian Opena u kojemu je također izgubio od Thiema.
