COVID-19 nije samo ljudska bolest – i životinje se mogu zaraziti. Dosad zaražene vrste uključuju domaće mačke, lavove, tigrove, kune i pse. U siječnju su tri gorile u zoološkom vrtu San Diego Safari Park bile pozitivne, što je prvi zabilježen slučaj kod čovjekolikih primata, piše National Geographic.

Gorile, koje je vjerojatno zarazio asimptomatski čuvar, oporavile su se, dijelom uz liječničku pomoć. Winston, 49-godišnji vođa skupine životinja, koji ima bolest srca, razvio je upalu pluća i dobio antibiotike, lijekove za srce i terapiju monoklonskim antitijelima.

To što su veliki majmuni osjetljivi na koronavirus ne iznenađuje istraživače, s obzirom na sličnost između ljudi i primata, uključujući gorile, čimpanze i orangutane. Sada postoji zabrinutost da bi ove životinje mogle biti izložene koronavirusu divljini.

Nova studija objavljena u znanstvenom časopisu "People and Nature" pokazuje da se radi o stvarnom riziku.

Kako bi stekli dojam koliko se turisti približavaju divljim planinskim gorilama u tri zemlje u kojima žive ugroženi primati - Ugandi, Ruandi i Demokratskoj Republici Kongo - tim znanstvenika analizirao je turističke selfije snimljene sa životinjama prije nego što je pandemija zavladala. Otkrili su da se većina ljudi koji objavljuju ove fotografije približila gorilama više nego što je dopušteno, često dovoljno blizu da prenesu bolesti poput koronavirusa.

Međunarodna unija za očuvanje prirode (IUCN), koja prati status divljih vrsta, objavila je smjernice za turizam u kojima preporučuju držanje udaljenosti od najmanje sedam metara od životinja i nošenje maski za lice. Uganda, Ruanda i DRC usvojili su pravilo sedam metara prije pandemije; samo je DRC imao potrebne maske za lice.

"Gorila turizam" sada djeluje, iako s ograničenim kapacitetom i sa strožim mjerama zaštite nego prije pandemije. No Svensson upozorava da će životinje biti izložene značajnom riziku od zaraze COVID-19 ako se pravila ubuduće ne ojačaju i ne provode.

- Ne želimo zaustaviti taj oblik turizma ili spriječiti ljude da vide ove nevjerojatne životinje, ali želimo to učiniti što sigurnijim za sve - kaže ona.

Respiratorne bolesti su posebna prijetnja

Turizam je velika blagodat za očuvanje primata, budući da osigurava bitna sredstva koja podržavaju napore u zaštiti i lokalno gospodarstvo. Također pomaže u držanju krivolovaca podalje dovodeći posjetitelje i čuvare u područja gdje se životinje nalaze i pokazujući lokalnom stanovništvu vrijednost održavanja velikih majmuna živima i zdravima.

Ali zbog naše genetske sličnosti s majmunima, ljudi im redovito prenose brojne bolesti, od E. coli do šuge i Giardia do upale pluća.

Bolesti dišnog sustava posebna su pošast. Nekoliko patogena koji općenito uzrokuju samo simptome slične prehladi kod ljudi mogu biti kobni za velike majmune - takvi su virusi vodeći uzrok smrti za neke populacije. Na primjer, 2016. i 2017. godine izbijanje respiratorne bolesti kod čimpanza u Nacionalnom parku Kibale u Ugandi ubilo je 25 životinja u jednoj skupini i zarazilo 44 posto od 205 članova grupe.

- Svi primati i mnogi majmuni gotovo su sigurno osjetljivi na infekciju i bolesti COVID-19 - kazao je Tony Goldberg, epidemiolog sa Sveučilišta Wisconsin u Madisonu.

Ako se divlje gorile zaraze koronavirusom, virus bi gotovo sigurno bio teži nego kod životinja u zatočeništvu u zoološkom vrtu u San Diegu, gdje životinje imaju "izvrsnu veterinarsku skrb", dodaje Goldberg.

- Vjerojatno bi se vrlo brzo proširio unutar obitelji gorila, koje sve svoje vrijeme provode zajedno - rekao je epidemiolog za National Geographic.

COVID-19 nije samo ljudska bolest – i životinje se mogu zaraziti. Dosad zaražene vrste uključuju domaće mačke, lavove, tigrove, kune i pse. U siječnju su tri gorile u zoološkom vrtu San Diego Safari Park bile pozitivne, što je prvi zabilježen slučaj kod čovjekolikih primata, piše National Geographic.

Gorile, koje je vjerojatno zarazio asimptomatski čuvar, oporavile su se, dijelom uz liječničku pomoć. Winston, 49-godišnji vođa skupine životinja, koji ima bolest srca, razvio je upalu pluća i dobio antibiotike, lijekove za srce i terapiju monoklonskim antitijelima.

To što su veliki majmuni osjetljivi na koronavirus ne iznenađuje istraživače, s obzirom na sličnost između ljudi i primata, uključujući gorile, čimpanze i orangutane. Sada postoji zabrinutost da bi ove životinje mogle biti izložene koronavirusu divljini.

Kako bi stekli dojam koliko se turisti približavaju divljim planinskim gorilama u tri zemlje u kojima žive ugroženi primati - Ugandi, Ruandi i Demokratskoj Republici Kongo - tim znanstvenika analizirao je turističke selfije snimljene sa životinjama prije nego što je pandemija zavladala. Otkrili su da se većina ljudi koji objavljuju ove fotografije približila gorilama više nego što je dopušteno, često dovoljno blizu da prenesu bolesti poput koronavirusa.

- Ono što smo vidjeli jest da se propisi ne poštuju uvijek i da je prosječna udaljenost između turista i gorila postajala sve kraća u posljednjih sedam godina - rekla je za National Geographic Magdalena Svensson, predavačica na Sveučilištu Oxford Brookes u Velikoj Britaniji, i jedna od autora studije "People and Nature".

Međunarodna unija za očuvanje prirode (IUCN), koja prati status divljih vrsta, objavila je smjernice za turizam u kojima preporučuju držanje udaljenosti od najmanje sedam metara od životinja i nošenje maski za lice. Uganda, Ruanda i DRC usvojili su pravilo sedam metara prije pandemije; samo je DRC imao potrebne maske za lice.

"Gorila turizam" sada djeluje, iako s ograničenim kapacitetom i sa strožim mjerama zaštite nego prije pandemije. No Svensson upozorava da će životinje biti izložene značajnom riziku od zaraze COVID-19 ako se pravila ubuduće ne ojačaju i ne provode.

- Ne želimo zaustaviti taj oblik turizma ili spriječiti ljude da vide ove nevjerojatne životinje, ali želimo to učiniti što sigurnijim za sve - kaže ona.

Respiratorne bolesti su posebna prijetnja

Turizam je velika blagodat za očuvanje primata, budući da osigurava bitna sredstva koja podržavaju napore u zaštiti i lokalno gospodarstvo. Također pomaže u držanju krivolovaca podalje dovodeći posjetitelje i čuvare u područja gdje se životinje nalaze i pokazujući lokalnom stanovništvu vrijednost održavanja velikih majmuna živima i zdravima.

Ali zbog naše genetske sličnosti s majmunima, ljudi im redovito prenose brojne bolesti, od E. coli do šuge i Giardia do upale pluća.

Bolesti dišnog sustava posebna su pošast. Nekoliko patogena koji općenito uzrokuju samo simptome slične prehladi kod ljudi mogu biti kobni za velike majmune - takvi su virusi vodeći uzrok smrti za neke populacije. Na primjer, 2016. i 2017. godine izbijanje respiratorne bolesti kod čimpanza u Nacionalnom parku Kibale u Ugandi ubilo je 25 životinja u jednoj skupini i zarazilo 44 posto od 205 članova grupe.

- Svi primati i mnogi majmuni gotovo su sigurno osjetljivi na infekciju i bolesti COVID-19 - kazao je Tony Goldberg, epidemiolog sa Sveučilišta Wisconsin u Madisonu.

Ako se divlje gorile zaraze koronavirusom, virus bi gotovo sigurno bio teži nego kod životinja u zatočeništvu u zoološkom vrtu u San Diegu, gdje životinje imaju "izvrsnu veterinarsku skrb", dodaje Goldberg.

- Vjerojatno bi se vrlo brzo proširio unutar obitelji gorila, koje sve svoje vrijeme provode zajedno - rekao je epidemiolog za National Geographic.

COVID-19 nije samo ljudska bolest – i životinje se mogu zaraziti. Dosad zaražene vrste uključuju domaće mačke, lavove, tigrove, kune i pse. U siječnju su tri gorile u zoološkom vrtu San Diego Safari Park bile pozitivne, što je prvi zabilježen slučaj kod čovjekolikih primata, piše National Geographic.

Gorile, koje je vjerojatno zarazio asimptomatski čuvar, oporavile su se, dijelom uz liječničku pomoć. Winston, 49-godišnji vođa skupine životinja, koji ima bolest srca, razvio je upalu pluća i dobio antibiotike, lijekove za srce i terapiju monoklonskim antitijelima.
