Istraživanje koje je trajalo gotovo desetljeće, a vodili su ga stručnjaci sa Sveučilište Yale, donosi izvanredno otkriće za oboljele od raka pluća. Naime, studija je pokazala da uzimanje jedne tablete dnevno lijeka osimertinib - dramatično smanjuje rizik od smrti pacijentima oboljelim od raka pluća i to čak za 51 posto. O tome svjedoče rezultati koji su objavljeni u Chicagu na najvećoj svjetskoj konferenciji specijalista za rak, čiji je domaćin Američko društvo za kliničku onkologiju (ASCO).

Rak pluća vodeći je svjetski uzrok smrti od raka, a svake godine od ove vrste karcinoma umire oko 1,8 milijuna ljudi godišnje.

Lijek je razvila farmaceutska tvrtka AstraZeneca i prodaje se pod imenom Tagrisso. Cilja na rak pluća kod pacijenata koji boluju od takozvanog raka ne-malih stanica, najčešćeg tipa koji pokazuje određenu vrstu mutacije. Te mutacije, na takozvanom receptoru epidermalnog faktora rasta ili EGFR, pogađaju 10 do 25 posto pacijenata s rakom pluća u Sjedinjenim Državama i Europi, te 30 do 40 posto u Aziji.

U kliničko istraživanje je bilo uključeno 680 oboljelih u dobi između 30 i 86 godina u ranoj fazi bolesti, a provedeno je u 26 zemalja. Oboljeli su prvo morali biti operirani kako bi se uklonio tumor, zatim je polovica pacijenata svakodnevno uzimala lijek, a druga placebo. Rezultat je pokazao da je uzimanje tablete osimertinib rezultiralo 51 postotnim smanjenjem rizika od smrti za liječene pacijente, u usporedbi s placebom.

Nakon pet godina, 88 posto pacijenata koji su uzimali terapiju bilo je još uvijek živo, u usporedbi sa 78 posto pacijenata koji su uzimali placebo. Oko dvije trećine pacijenata nije imalo povijest pušenja, što sugerira da pilula djeluje kod pušača i nepušača kojima je dijagnosticiran rak pluća.

- Prije trideset godina nismo mogli učiniti ništa za te pacijente. Sada imamo ovaj moćan lijek – oduševljeno je rekao dr. Neki pacijenti u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu, SAD-u i drugim zemljama već imaju pristup ovom lijeku. Iz AstraZenece su poručili kako je lijek do sad primilo oko 700.000 ljudi.

Angela Terry, predsjednica EGFR Positive UK, dobrotvorne organizacije za borbu protiv raka pluća, rekla je za britanski Guardian da su otkrića "vrlo uzbudljiva" i "iznimno značajna".

Istraživanje koje je trajalo gotovo desetljeće, a vodili su ga stručnjaci sa Sveučilište Yale, donosi izvanredno otkriće za oboljele od raka pluća. Naime, studija je pokazala da uzimanje jedne tablete dnevno lijeka osimertinib - dramatično smanjuje rizik od smrti pacijentima oboljelim od raka pluća i to čak za 51 posto. O tome svjedoče rezultati koji su objavljeni u Chicagu na najvećoj svjetskoj konferenciji specijalista za rak, čiji je domaćin Američko društvo za kliničku onkologiju (ASCO).

Rak pluća vodeći je svjetski uzrok smrti od raka, a svake godine od ove vrste karcinoma umire oko 1,8 milijuna ljudi godišnje.

Lijek je razvila farmaceutska tvrtka AstraZeneca i prodaje se pod imenom Tagrisso. Cilja na rak pluća kod pacijenata koji boluju od takozvanog raka ne-malih stanica, najčešćeg tipa koji pokazuje određenu vrstu mutacije. Te mutacije, na takozvanom receptoru epidermalnog faktora rasta ili EGFR, pogađaju 10 do 25 posto pacijenata s rakom pluća u Sjedinjenim Državama i Europi, te 30 do 40 posto u Aziji.

U kliničko istraživanje je bilo uključeno 680 oboljelih u dobi između 30 i 86 godina u ranoj fazi bolesti, a provedeno je u 26 zemalja. Oboljeli su prvo morali biti operirani kako bi se uklonio tumor, zatim je polovica pacijenata svakodnevno uzimala lijek, a druga placebo. Rezultat je pokazao da je uzimanje tablete osimertinib rezultiralo 51 postotnim smanjenjem rizika od smrti za liječene pacijente, u usporedbi s placebom.

Nakon pet godina, 88 posto pacijenata koji su uzimali terapiju bilo je još uvijek živo, u usporedbi sa 78 posto pacijenata koji su uzimali placebo. Oko dvije trećine pacijenata nije imalo povijest pušenja, što sugerira da pilula djeluje kod pušača i nepušača kojima je dijagnosticiran rak pluća.

- Prije trideset godina nismo mogli učiniti ništa za te pacijente. Sada imamo ovaj moćan lijek – oduševljeno je rekao dr. Otprilike trećina slučajeva raka ne-malih stanica može se operirati kada se otkrije, rekao je. Herbst je naglasio potrebu pregleda pacijenata kako bi se otkrilo imaju li EGFR mutaciju. Neki pacijenti u Ujedinjenom Kraljevstvu, SAD-u i drugim zemljama već imaju pristup ovom lijeku. Iz AstraZenece su poručili kako je lijek do sad primilo oko 700.000 ljudi.

"Teško mi je i opisati koliko je ovo otkriće važno", poručio je Nathan Pennell iz Cleveland Clinic Foundationa. Angela Terry, predsjednica EGFR Positive UK, dobrotvorne organizacije za borbu protiv raka pluća, rekla je za britanski Guardian da su otkrića "vrlo uzbudljiva" i "iznimno značajna".
