Barbara Green (79) iz Falls Churcha u Virginiji vodila je aktivan život, hodajući svaki dan i vježbajući jogu prije nego što je osjetila čudan simptom početkom srpnja 2022. Barbaru se usred noći probudila jer ju je svugdje svrbjelo.

Isprva nije razmišljala o tome, ali je otišla liječnicima kada se svrbež nije smirila tjedan dana.

Liječnici su naručili krvne pretrage jer su saznali da joj je stolica postala svjetlije boje, a urin tamniji, a kasnije joj je dijagnosticiran rak gušterače u četvrtom stadiju.

Barbara je za Today rekla: "Svrbilo me kao da me je ugrizla bube, ali ovo je poput ugriza bube koji se proširio na cijelo tijelo.

"Vjerojala sam da će liječnik misliti da sam totalno luda jer sam došla zato što me je svrbjelo.

"Nisam imala pojma da sa mnom nešto nije u redu. Mislila sam da sam savršeno dobro. Svi ostali znaju da je rak gušterače smrtonosan. Ja to nisam znala."

Oko 8800 Britanaca svake godine oboli od raka gušterače, a 8700 umire od te bolesti. Broj oboljelih od raka gušterače raste, te se predviđa da će prestići broj oboljelih od raka dojke i postati četvrti najsmrtonosniji rak u zemlji do 2030. godine.

Iako se petogodišnja stopa preživljavanja većine karcinoma poboljšava, stopa raka gušterače ostala je ista u posljednjih 40 godina u Velikoj Britaniji.

Kasna dijagnoza čest je problem, a četiri od pet slučajeva uočeno je tek kada je rak metastazirao.

Simptomi mogu uključivati probavne smetnje, bol u trbuhu ili leđima, promjene u stolici, neobjašnjiv gubitak težine ili gubitak apetita i žutu kožu ili oči.

Međutim, u rijetkim slučajevima može uzrokovati progresivnu svrbež koji često prati žuticu - žutilo kože ili očiju - kao u Barbarinom slučaju.

Bolest se Barbari proširila. Nije bila kandidat za operaciju i liječnici su joj dali manje od godinu dana života, ali je dobila ciklus kemoterapije.

Prošlo je 15 mjeseci od dijagnoze i tumor joj se toliko smanjio da je jedva vidljiv na slikama.

Barbara je rekla da "ne zna koliko će još dugo živjeti", ali kaže da se "čini da ne umire prema rasporedu".

"Prošlo je više od godinu dana od moje dijagnoze i dobar je osjećaj kazati da su mi se tumori smanjili, iako skeniranje još uvijek pokazuje rak. Nastavljam da živim svoj život najbolje što mogu, pa kako bude", rekla je Barbara.

Barbara Green (79) iz Falls Churcha u Virginiji vodila je aktivan život, hodajući svaki dan i vježbajući jogu prije nego što je osjetila čudan simptom početkom srpnja 2022. Barbaru se usred noći probudila jer ju je svugdje svrbjelo.

Isprva nije razmišljala o tome, ali je otišla liječnicima kada se svrbež nije smirila tjedan dana.

Liječnici su naručili krvne pretrage jer su saznali da joj je stolica postala svjetlije boje, a urin tamniji, a kasnije joj je dijagnosticiran rak gušterače u četvrtom stadiju.

Barbara je za Today rekla: "Svrbilo me kao da me je ugrizla bube, ali ovo je poput ugriza bube koji se proširio na cijelo tijelo.

"Vjerojala sam da će liječnik misliti da sam totalno luda jer sam došla zato što me je svrbjelo.

"Nisam imala pojma da sa mnom nešto nije u redu. Mislila sam da sam savršeno dobro. Svi ostali znaju da je rak gušterače smrtonosan. Ja to nisam znala."

Oko 8800 Britanaca svake godine oboli od raka gušterače, a 8700 umire od te bolesti. Broj oboljelih od raka gušterače raste, te se predviđa da će prestići broj oboljelih od raka dojke i postati četvrti najsmrtonosniji rak u zemlji do 2030. godine.

Iako se petogodišnja stopa preživljavanja većine karcinoma poboljšava, stopa raka gušterače ostala je ista u posljednjih 40 godina u Velikoj Britaniji.

Kasna dijagnoza čest je problem, a četiri od pet slučajeva uočeno je tek kada je rak metastazirao.

Simptomi mogu uključivati probavne smetnje, bol u trbuhu ili leđima, promjene u stolici, neobjašnjiv gubitak težine ili gubitak apetita i žutu kožu ili oči.

Međutim, u rijetkim slučajevima može uzrokovati progresivnu svrbež koji često prati žuticu - žutilo kože ili očiju - kao u Barbarinom slučaju.

Bolest se Barbari proširila. Nije bila kandidat za operaciju i liječnici su joj dali manje od godinu dana života, ali je dobila ciklus kemoterapije.

Prošlo je 15 mjeseci od dijagnoze i tumor joj se toliko smanjio da je jedva vidljiv na slikama.

Barbara je rekla da "ne zna koliko će još dugo živjeti", ali kaže da se "čini da ne umire prema rasporedu".

"Prošlo je više od godinu dana od moje dijagnoze i dobar je osjećaj kazati da su mi se tumori smanjili, iako skeniranje još uvijek pokazuje rak. Nastavljam da živim svoj život najbolje što mogu, pa kako bude", rekla je Barbara.
