Čovjek je "izliječen" od HIV-a i leukemije nakon "izvanredne" transplantacije matičnih stanica uz pomoć donora s rijetkom genetskom mutacijom. Paulu Edmondsu (67) AIDS je dijagnosticiran 1988. godine. Nakon što je 30 godina živio s tim stanjem, 2018. dijagnosticiran mu je mijelodisplastični sindrom, koji se na kraju razvio u akutnu mijeloičnu leukemiju (AML). To je uobičajeno kod starijih ljudi s HIV-om - uzročnikom AIDS-a - jer ih njihov oslabljeni imunološki sustav čini ranjivima na razvoj leukemije i drugih vrsta raka krvi, prenosi Jutarnji list.

Paul nikada nije mislio da će se osloboditi bolesti. No, otkako je primio revolucionarnu transplantaciju matičnih stanica u centru za liječenje i istraživanje raka City of Hope u Kaliforniji 2019., Paul je već pet godina u remisiji smrtonosnog stanja. Za dvije godine mogao bi se smatrati ‘izliječenim‘ od HIV-a, jer će se navršiti pet godina od njegovog posljednjeg liječenja tog stanja. Za proslavu, medicinski tim koji stoji iza njegovog zapanjujućeg oporavka objavio je pismo u kojem opisuje njegovo liječenje u New England Journal of Medicine.

Kada je medicinski uspjeh prvi put objavljen u srpnju 2022., Paul je želio ostati anoniman i dobio je nadimak ‘pacijent Grada nade‘. Ali sada je izabran da progovori o svojoj priči. On je peta osoba koja će biti izliječena od HIV-a i najstarija koja je ušla u dugotrajnu remisiju. Paul iz Desert Hot Springsa u Kaliforniji rekao je: "Glavni razlog zbog kojeg želim ispričati svoju priču je da donesem malo nade za ljude s HIV-om. I želim se sjećati svih onih koje smo izgubili."

Paul je živio s HIV-om 31 godinu prije nego što je primio revolucionarnu transplantaciju. Od 1997. bio je na antiretrovirusnoj terapiji protiv HIV-a, koja je potisnula virus do nemjerljive razine. Ali, antiretrovirusna terapija ne liječi HIV, pa se DNK virusa još uvijek zadržao u imunološkim stanicama u njegovoj krvi.

Ahmed M. Aribi, asistent na Odsjeku za leukemiju City of Hopea koji je bio uključen u Paulovu njegu, dao mu je do znanja da će mu trebati transplantacija matičnih stanica kako bi pobijedio rak. Ali, Paulov liječnički tim odlučio je potražiti donora koji nosi rijetku genetsku mutaciju otpornu na HIV, u nadi da će i njega izliječiti od AIDS-a. Naziva se homozigotna mutacija CCR5 delta 32, a čini ljude otpornima na većinu sojeva HIV infekcije.

Budući da pacijenti s transplantacijom prvo moraju dovesti svoj rak do remisije, Paul je prošao tri iscrpljujuće runde kemoterapije prije nego što je mogao pokušati s liječenjem. Također je proveo još tjedan dana kemoterapije prije transplantacije kako bi u potpunosti pročistio svoj imunološki sustav i pripremio svoje tijelo za primanje zdravih matičnih stanica.

Paul također nije pokazivao znakove leukemije otkako je krenuo s liječenjem. Nakon što je skoro tri godine pauzirao s lijekovima za HIV, dr. Dickter je rekla da je "sretna zbog njega". U pismu objavljenom u New England Journal of Medicine, liječnici su napisali: "U trenutku ovog izvješća pacijent nije imao HIV-1 infekciju 35 mjeseci nakon prekida antiretrovirusne terapije.

Transplantacije matičnih stanica nose značajne rizike, tako da neće svi ljudi koji žive s HIV-om moći primiti ovaj tretman. Još uvijek je održiv samo za ljude s po život opasnim rakom krvi poput Paula.

Čovjek je "izliječen" od HIV-a i leukemije nakon "izvanredne" transplantacije matičnih stanica uz pomoć donora s rijetkom genetskom mutacijom. Paulu Edmondsu (67) AIDS je dijagnosticiran 1988. godine. Nakon što je 30 godina živio s tim stanjem, 2018. dijagnosticiran mu je mijelodisplastični sindrom, koji se na kraju razvio u akutnu mijeloičnu leukemiju (AML). To je uobičajeno kod starijih ljudi s HIV-om - uzročnikom AIDS-a - jer ih njihov oslabljeni imunološki sustav čini ranjivima na razvoj leukemije i drugih vrsta raka krvi, prenosi Jutarnji list.

Paul nikada nije mislio da će se osloboditi bolesti. No, otkako je primio revolucionarnu transplantaciju matičnih stanica u centru za liječenje i istraživanje raka City of Hope u Kaliforniji 2019., Paul je već pet godina u remisiji smrtonosnog stanja. Za dvije godine mogao bi se smatrati ‘izliječenim‘ od HIV-a, jer će se navršiti pet godina od njegovog posljednjeg liječenja tog stanja. Paul je živio s HIV-om 31 godinu prije nego što je primio revolucionarnu transplantaciju. Od 1997. bio je na antiretrovirusnoj terapiji protiv HIV-a, koja je potisnula virus do nemjerljive razine. Ali, antiretrovirusna terapija ne liječi HIV, pa se DNK virusa još uvijek zadržao u imunološkim stanicama u njegovoj krvi.

Ahmed M. Aribi, asistent na Odsjeku za leukemiju City of Hopea koji je bio uključen u Paulovu njegu, dao mu je do znanja da će mu trebati transplantacija matičnih stanica kako bi pobijedio rak. Ali, Paulov liječnički tim odlučio je potražiti donora koji nosi rijetku genetsku mutaciju otpornu na HIV, u nadi da će i njega izliječiti od AIDS-a. Naziva se homozigotna mutacija CCR5 delta 32, a čini ljude otpornima na većinu sojeva HIV infekcije.

Budući da pacijenti s transplantacijom prvo moraju dovesti svoj rak do remisije, Paul je prošao tri iscrpljujuće runde kemoterapije prije nego što je mogao pokušati s liječenjem. Također je proveo još tjedan dana kemoterapije prije transplantacije kako bi u potpunosti pročistio svoj imunološki sustav i pripremio svoje tijelo za primanje zdravih matičnih stanica.

Paul također nije pokazivao znakove leukemije otkako je krenuo s liječenjem. Nakon što je skoro tri godine pauzirao s lijekovima za HIV, dr. Dickter je rekla da je "sretna zbog njega". Čovjek je "izliječen" od HIV-a i leukemije nakon "izvanredne" transplantacije matičnih stanica uz pomoć donora s rijetkom genetskom mutacijom. Paulu Edmondsu (67) AIDS je dijagnosticiran 1988. godine. Nakon što je 30 godina živio s tim stanjem, 2018. dijagnosticiran mu je mijelodisplastični sindrom, koji se na kraju razvio u akutnu mijeloičnu leukemiju (AML). To je uobičajeno kod starijih ljudi s HIV-om - uzročnikom AIDS-a - jer ih njihov oslabljeni imunološki sustav čini ranjivima na razvoj leukemije i drugih vrsta raka krvi, prenosi Jutarnji list.

Paul nikada nije mislio da će se osloboditi bolesti. No, otkako je primio revolucionarnu transplantaciju matičnih stanica u centru za liječenje i istraživanje raka City of Hope u Kaliforniji 2019., Paul je već pet godina u remisiji smrtonosnog stanja.
