Gradnja carske fregate SMS Novara (Seiner Majestät Schiff - brod Njegova Veličanstva) započeta je u venecijanskom Arsenalu 1843. godine, a zbog tadašnjih turbulentnih događanja između Venecije i austrijske vlasti porinuta je u more tek u studenom 1850. U međuvremenu, čak i prije porinuća, tri je puta mijenjala ime.

Gradnja je započeta pod imenom Minerva, djelomično dovršenu 1948. mletački su je revolucionari preimenovali u Italia, imenom koje je naredbom tada bilo zabranjeno za upotrebu u monarhiji, da bi joj povratkom Austrije ime ponovno mijenjano, sada u Novara. Kompletno je opremljena tek u lipnju 1851. Poduzimajući svoja prva krstarenja Mediteranom, pokazala se brzim brodom i do 1857. godine zabilježena je kao najbrža u floti.

Tijekom velike rekonstrukcije 1861. i 1862. godine ugrađen joj je parni stroj. Nakon dvadeset godina ponovno je uklonjen, a fregata transformirana u školski brod, namijenjen prvenstveno za obuku rukovanja oružjem, topovima. Veliko oštećenje u listopadu 1898. bilo je razlog da je se povuče iz službe i sljedeće godine otpiše.

Pedeset godina službe

U svojih pedesetak godina službe odigrala je nekoliko vrlo bitnih uloga. Bila je omiljen brod nadvojvode Ferdinanda Maksimilijana, vrhovnog zapovjednika austrijske mornarice. To je bio i razlog zašto je odabrao baš ovu fregatu da ga, zajedno sa suprugom Charlotte, 1864. preveze do Meksika, gdje će biti postavljeni za cara i caricu.

Odigrala je i značajnu ulogu u sastavu austrijske flote koja je pod vodstvom admirala Wilhelma von Tegettoffa u Viškoj bitci 1866. porazila Talijane.

Ova je fregata bila zadužena da 1867. iz Meksika vrati tijelo pogubljenog cara Maksimilijana i njegovu suprugu Charlotte, koja je, slomljena, pod pritiskom svega proživljenog, ostatak života provela u izolaciji. Zadatak prijevoza do Trsta povjeren je admiralu Tegettoffu, a tijelo je do Beča pratio viceadmiral barun Wüllerstorf-Urbair.

Ipak, ono po čemu će se SMS Novara najviše pamtiti bila je prva austrijska opsežna znanstvena ekspedicija koja je oplovila svijet. Zapovjednik ekspedicije Bernhard Aloys Freiherr von Wüllerstorf und Urbair, u brodskom dnevniku kao prvi dan bilježi 15. travnja 1857. kada je Novara zaplovila iz Pule, u čijem su arsenalu izvedene prilagodbe za putovanje.

Luka polaska bio je Trst, gdje su ukrcane namirnice, podešeni instrumenti i obavljene protokolarne svečanosti. SMS Novara na putu do Južne Amerike pratila je korveta SMS Caroline, a oba su broda kroz Jadran i sve do Sicilije otegljena. Time se željelo uštedjeti na vremenu, jer je proljeće na Jadranu bilo poznato po nepovoljnim vjetrovima ili njihovu izostanku.

Obilje vode za piće

Osim primarnog cilja, stjecanja praktičnih znanja u navigaciji i promicanja tada mlade austrijske mornarice na mjestima gdje ranije nije viđena, jedan od posrednih ciljeva bio je i sakupljanje uzoraka za zbirku Geološkog instituta u Beču, koji se poslije razvio u današnji Prirodoslovni muzej.

Jedan od razloga zbog kojih se na tako dugotrajan put odlučilo poći jedrenjakom, a ne parobrodom, upravo je nužan prostor za smještaj prikupljenog materijala. Tijekom 551 dan plovidbe i 298 dana provedenih na sidru obišli su brojna mjesta Afrike, Indije, Kine, Filipina, Indonezije, Južnog Pacifika, Australije, Novog Zelanda i Južne Amerike, s kojih je prikupljeno 26.000 uzoraka geološkog, botaničkog, zoološkog i etnološkog materijala.

Zanimljivo je da se među 550 uzoraka sakupljenih za etnografsku i antropološku zbirku našlo i 100 lubanja koje su predstavljale sve poznate svjetske rase.

Na ovom putu testirana su i neka nova dostignuća u znanosti i tehnici, a jedan od njih je i stroj za desalinizaciju morske vode. Član ekspedicije, etnolog i antropolog Karl von Sherzer u svojoj knjizi o ovom putovanju, kasnijem bestseleru izdanom u 3 sveska i na 1200 stranica, tvrdi da za izvanredno zdravlje posade tijekom čitave ekspedicije treba upravo zahvaliti tako dobivenoj vodi za piće i redovnom održavanje higijene.

Spomen-medalje Hrvatima

Članovima posade, a većina mornara bili su Hrvati, nakon ekspedicije 1859. podijeljene su spomen-medalje Novara, iskovane u slavnoj bečkoj radionici Karla Radnitzkya. Jedna takva, nepoznatog mornara, nalazi se i u vitrini Hrvatskog pomorskog muzeja Split. Pored nje muzej čuva jedan od četiri brodska dnevnika zapovjednika ekspedicije.

Prvi svezak talijanskog prijevoda trodijelne knjige etnologa i antropologa Karla von Sherzera i jednu manju kutiju s geološkim uzorcima donesenim s ekspedicije. U kutiji s 20 geoloških uzoraka nalaze se, primjerice, i bazalt s Madeire, gnajs iz Rio de Janeira, granit iz Hong Konga i koraljni vapnenac s pacifičkih atola.

Gradnja carske fregate SMS Novara (Seiner Majestät Schiff - brod Njegova Veličanstva) započeta je u venecijanskom Arsenalu 1843. godine, a zbog tadašnjih turbulentnih događanja između Venecije i austrijske vlasti porinuta je u more tek u studenom 1850. U međuvremenu, čak i prije porinuća, tri je puta mijenjala ime.

Gradnja je započeta pod imenom Minerva, djelomično dovršenu 1948. mletački su je revolucionari preimenovali u Italia, imenom koje je naredbom tada bilo zabranjeno za upotrebu u monarhiji, da bi joj povratkom Austrije ime ponovno mijenjano, sada u Novara. Kompletno je opremljena tek u lipnju 1851. Poduzimajući svoja prva krstarenja Mediteranom, pokazala se brzim brodom i do 1857. godine zabilježena je kao najbrža u floti.

Tijekom velike rekonstrukcije 1861. i 1862. godine ugrađen joj je parni stroj. Nakon dvadeset godina ponovno je uklonjen, a fregata transformirana u školski brod, namijenjen prvenstveno za obuku rukovanja oružjem, topovima. Veliko oštećenje u listopadu 1898. bilo je razlog da je se povuče iz službe i sljedeće godine otpiše.

Pedeset godina službe

U svojih pedesetak godina službe odigrala je nekoliko vrlo bitnih uloga. Bila je omiljen brod nadvojvode Ferdinanda Maksimilijana, vrhovnog zapovjednika austrijske mornarice. To je bio i razlog zašto je odabrao baš ovu fregatu da ga, zajedno sa suprugom Charlotte, 1864. preveze do Meksika, gdje će biti postavljeni za cara i caricu.

Odigrala je i značajnu ulogu u sastavu austrijske flote koja je pod vodstvom admirala Wilhelma von Tegettoffa u Viškoj bitci 1866. porazila Talijane.

Ova je fregata bila zadužena da 1867. iz Meksika vrati tijelo pogubljenog cara Maksimilijana i njegovu suprugu Charlotte, koja je, slomljena, pod pritiskom svega proživljenog, ostatak života provela u izolaciji. Zadatak prijevoza do Trsta povjeren je admiralu Tegettoffu, a tijelo je do Beča pratio viceadmiral barun Wüllerstorf-Urbair.

Ipak, ono po čemu će se SMS Novara najviše pamtiti bila je prva austrijska opsežna znanstvena ekspedicija koja je oplovila svijet. Zapovjednik ekspedicije Bernhard Aloys Freiherr von Wüllerstorf und Urbair, u brodskom dnevniku kao prvi dan bilježi 15. travnja 1857. kada je Novara zaplovila iz Pule, u čijem su arsenalu izvedene prilagodbe za putovanje.

Luka polaska bio je Trst, gdje su ukrcane namirnice, podešeni instrumenti i obavljene protokolarne svečanosti. SMS Novara na putu do Južne Amerike pratila je korveta SMS Caroline, a oba su broda kroz Jadran i sve do Sicilije otegljena. Time se željelo uštedjeti na vremenu, jer je proljeće na Jadranu bilo poznato po nepovoljnim vjetrovima ili njihovu izostanku.

Obilje vode za piće

Osim primarnog cilja, stjecanja praktičnih znanja u navigaciji i promicanja tada mlade austrijske mornarice na mjestima gdje ranije nije viđena, jedan od posrednih ciljeva bio je i sakupljanje uzoraka za zbirku Geološkog instituta u Beču, koji se poslije razvio u današnji Prirodoslovni muzej.

Jedan od razloga zbog kojih se na tako dugotrajan put odlučilo poći jedrenjakom, a ne parobrodom, upravo je nužan prostor za smještaj prikupljenog materijala. Tijekom 551 dan plovidbe i 298 dana provedenih na sidru obišli su brojna mjesta Afrike, Indije, Kine, Filipina, Indonezije, Južnog Pacifika, Australije, Novog Zelanda i Južne Amerike, s kojih je prikupljeno 26.000 uzoraka geološkog, botaničkog, zoološkog i etnološkog materijala.

Zanimljivo je da se među 550 uzoraka sakupljenih za etnografsku i antropološku zbirku našlo i 100 lubanja koje su predstavljale sve poznate svjetske rase.

Na ovom putu testirana su i neka nova dostignuća u znanosti i tehnici, a jedan od njih je i stroj za desalinizaciju morske vode. Član ekspedicije, etnolog i antropolog Karl von Sherzer u svojoj knjizi o ovom putovanju, kasnijem bestseleru izdanom u 3 sveska i na 1200 stranica, tvrdi da za izvanredno zdravlje posade tijekom čitave ekspedicije treba upravo zahvaliti tako dobivenoj vodi za piće i redovnom održavanje higijene.

Spomen-medalje Hrvatima

Članovima posade, a većina mornara bili su Hrvati, nakon ekspedicije 1859. podijeljene su spomen-medalje Novara, iskovane u slavnoj bečkoj radionici Karla Radnitzkya. Jedna takva, nepoznatog mornara, nalazi se i u vitrini Hrvatskog pomorskog muzeja Split. Pored nje muzej čuva jedan od četiri brodska dnevnika zapovjednika ekspedicije.

Prvi svezak talijanskog prijevoda trodijelne knjige etnologa i antropologa Karla von Sherzera i jednu manju kutiju s geološkim uzorcima donesenim s ekspedicije. U kutiji s 20 geoloških uzoraka nalaze se, primjerice, i bazalt s Madeire, gnajs iz Rio de Janeira, granit iz Hong Konga i koraljni vapnenac s pacifičkih atola.
